Elder Scrolls Companion Role Guide

Elder Scrolls Companion Guide

This guide will show you the best companion for each role in ESO.

This Companion Guide will show you the Best Companion for every role in ESO! The Companions of ESO are helpful NPCs that can accompany and assist you in combat around Tamriel. Companions are an amazing tool for new or veteran players that can help with PVE content.

While the Companions’ power levels may be similar, their distinctive skills define their play styles, making them more suitable for specific roles and content. Beyond three unique skill lines, Companions can also utilize abilities from the Weapon, Guild, and Armor lines. Furthermore, their racial ability determines the role they are best suited for.

There are currently six Companions available: Azandar, Bastian, Ember, Isobel, Mirri, and Sharp. Bastian and Mirri can be unlocked with the Blackwood DLC. The High Isle DLC is required for Ember and Isobel. To unlock Azandar and Sharp, you will need the Necrom DLC.

Every Companion in The Elder Scrolls Online embodies a playable Class and Race:

  • Azandar, a Redguard Arcanist, can be found outside Cipher’s Midden in the Apocrypha zone.
  • Bastian, an Imperial Dragonknight, is located in the Southern part of Blackwood, near Deepscorn Hollow.
  • Mirri, a Dark Elf Nightblade, can be found near Doomvault Vulpinaz in Blackwood.
  • Ember, a Khajiit Sorcerer, awaits near the Tor Draioch point of interest in High Isle.
  • Isobel, a Breton Templar, is situated near Castle Navire in High Isle.
  • Sharp, an Argonian Warden, can be found outside Necrom, the capital of the Telvanni Peninsula zone.

Please be aware that their Skills and the roles they can successfully undertake are influenced by their Class and Race.

Ember:

As a Sorcerer, Ember excels at Magicka DPS, along with Isobel. With strong shock damage abilities and shields, she can stay at range and deal significant damage. As a Mage, Ember is a great choice for AOE as well as single-target damage.

Ember

Isobel:

On the other hand, Isobel possesses potent magical abilities that deliver impactful hits. When combined with Weapon and other class abilities, she becomes a formidable mage. Additionally, her strong healing skills prove invaluable in combating multiple enemies.

Sharp:

Sharp, the Frost Mage among the Companions, proves to be remarkably formidable. He excels in dealing substantial damage, showcasing excellent survivability, and wielding effective crowd control, making him a versatile and valuable asset against adversaries.

Azandar, Bastian and Mirri:

Azandar, Bastian, and Mirri share the same level of proficiency as Magicka DPS. While all three can perform relatively well, it may be more advantageous to consider other options.

Azandar and Mirri excel when engaging from a distance, while Bastian thrives in melee range, primarily due to his Dragonknight Skills.

Which companions are better for Stamina DPS:

Isobel:

Isobel is an excellent fit for this role! As a skilled Brawler Companion proficient in melee weapons, she also excels with the Bow. Her powerful striking abilities, coupled with healing and weapon skills, make Isobel an effective DPS assistant.

Isobel

Mirri:

Mirri is yet another dependable melee fighter who proves her prowess with a bow as well! Her Nightblade abilities and potent execute move enable her to handle adversaries effectively and swiftly finish them off when their health is low.

Bastian:

Bastian is also a robust brawler-type companion! He exhibits remarkable versatility in this role, capable of dealing damage through weapon skills or his melee range magic abilities.

Ember and Sharp:

Ember and Sharp may not be the most ideal for that role. While their shields, heals, and AOE skills are valuable in battles against multiple enemies, they might encounter challenges when operating independently.

Azandar:

Lastly, Azandar does not fall into the brawler category of Companions. While he excels in providing support and demonstrates competence with the Bow, melee combat is not his area of expertise.

Azandar

Which companions are better to use as a Tank:

Isobel:

Isobel again is the best option for the role of Tanking. The best and sturdiest out of all Companions. Strong shields and heals will help Isobel to tank strong enemies with success. Very reliable in that role!

Sharp:

Sharp is not far behind either! He is another Companion who excels as a Tank, thanks to his defensive skills and self-healing abilities.

Bastian:

Bastian is another powerful Tank Companion capable of drawing aggro and enabling you to defeat formidable foes. While his healing abilities may not match those of Isobel or Sharp, he might need some assistance from you to sustain himself during battles.

Bastian

Azandar:

Azandar excels as a Tank due to his supportive nature and the Vulnerability debuffs he provides. However, when geared up for tanking, he falls short in terms of self-healing and may encounter difficulty in restoring his health without your assistance.

Ember:

Ember has the potential to fulfill the role of Tank, but she may not be the best candidate for the job. While her shield and healing abilities are beneficial, they may not suffice to tank stronger enemies effectively.

Mirri:

Mirri, on the other hand, proves to be a subpar option for tanking. She lacks Tank-focused abilities and cannot recover on her own if her health drops too low.

Which companions are better to use as a Healer:

Isobel:

Being a Templar grant Isobel access to several exceptional healing abilities, positioning her as the top Companion for the role of Healer.

Sharp:

Sharp possesses a set of incredible healing abilities, and his Passive skill makes him an outstanding choice for the role. While his healing style differs from Isobel’s, both companions excel as Healers!

sharp

Ember:

Ember, on the other hand, is another outstanding Healer Companion. With her shielding capabilities and a repertoire of healing abilities from both class and weapon skills, she ensures your protection and sustenance.

Mirri:

Mirri is a flexible and reliable healer, capable of either focusing on healing with a combination of class and weapon abilities or functioning as a Healer/DPS hybrid, employing a mix of skills.

Mirri

Azandar and Bastion:

Azandar and Bastian, while capable of healing, are more of a Support/Healer hybrid.

Azandar possesses a few healing skills that offer some assistance but nothing exceptional. Bastian, on the other hand, relies mostly on weapon and guild abilities to fulfill the healer role and is better suited as a healer/buffer hybrid.

To level up your companions you will need to grind XP at specific locations.

Companion gear drops from enemies in ESO, although it’s rarer compared to player Armor Sets, with its highest quality being Epic (Gold gear is obtainable as an event reward!).

Bosses provide a higher likelihood of dropping equipment for your companions, but you also have the option to purchase it from designated merchants.
