This year will see the release of a new version of the Atari 2600

According to reports, the Atari 2600+ will be compatible with classic games released for the original platform as well as the Atari 7800. The Atari 2600+, which will be available on November 17th for $129.99, will include a number of improvements over the original system. Notably, the console will support HDMI and widescreen displays, allowing players to enjoy the system’s library on modern televisions.

If you don’t have any old cartridges lying around, the system will come with a pack-in cart containing ten classic games released for the original system:

  • Adventure
  • Combat Dodge ‘Em
  • Haunted House
  • Maze Craze
  • Missile Command
  • RealSports Volleyball
  • Surround
  • Video Pinball
  • Yars’ Revenge

In addition to the 10-in-1 cartridge, the console will come with an Atari CX40+ Joystick. While the system’s design closely resembles the original console, there are a few notable differences, such as the inclusion of an HDMI port. The Atari 2600+ is approximately 80% the size of its predecessor, and the Atari logo on the front now illuminates when the system is operational.

Super Cobra

With the announcement, Atari released a comprehensive compatibility list categorizing games into three sections: Passed, Untested, and Failed. While numerous games are yet to be tested on the Atari 2600+, only three titles are currently listed as Failed: RealSports Boxing, Super Cobra, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

It’s conceivable that this number might increase with further testing, so prospective buyers are advised to review the complete list before making a purchase. Fortunately, many well-known games have already undergone testing and received a pass, including titles like Mario Bros., Donkey Kong, Spider-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, and Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Pre-orders for the Atari 2600+ are presently open on the company’s website, accessible right here.
