The developer will be ending support for the card game in 2024 although it will still receive more content in 2023.
CD Projekt Red has announced that Gwent: The Witcher Card Game is nearing the end of its life. And the studio will be moving their developers to other projects.
Although support will be pulled from the game, they have assured that the game will remain online for years to come.
In 2023, they will support Gwent with new cards and eSports tournaments. But from 2024 onwards the game will shift to a community-focused project, internally known as Project Gwentfinity.
Gwentfinity will feature a seasonal progression system that rewards creativity along with a new balancing feature that lets the community vote on changes to balance. Though CD Projekt Red said restrictions would be in place to prevent manipulation and “game-breaking” changes.
In the meanwhile, they will release, three expansions featuring 72 new cards for Gwent in April, July, and September 2023. Additionally, there will be two eSports competitions, and monthly balance adjustments will proceed as usual.
Within this time, CD Projekt Red aims to develop a perfectly balanced deck of cards and include other elements that support Gwent’s sustainability.
They released Gwent: Rogue Mage, the last major release for Gwent, earlier this year for PC, Android, and iOS. With its focus on Alzur, a magician trying to make the first Witcher, Gwent: Rogue Mage offers more PvE adventures.
It is not a surprise that CD Projekt Red has chosen to bench support for the game as they have a lot on their plates at the moment.
They recently announced that they are busy with no less than 7 new projects at the moment. These range from sequels to remakes to new trilogies and DLCs. This includes an exciting new Cyberpunk 2077 sequel in the works.
The Witcher franchise is receiving new content too. For instance, next week they will release the next-gen upgrade for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. There will also be The Witcher Sirius, a remake of the first Witcher Game. As well as The Witcher 4 which is currently in development.
Fans of The Witcher series and those who want to follow Geralt of Rivia and his impending adventures have exciting times ahead of them.
