The Dune franchise is getting a new 4x RTS which will be coming to fans next year.
The first Dune game was released way back in 1992 with a sequel Dune II later that year and then they revisited the franchise with Dune 2000 that wasn’t very well received.
This time around the game will be produced by Shiro Games, a French studio that was founded in 2012 and is known for games like Evoland 2, Northgard, and Darksburg. The game will be published by Funcom.
Dune: Spice Wars is described as being: “a real-time strategy game with 4X elements based on Frank Herbert’s groundbreaking novel Dune”.
As Dune fans already know, Spice is the most valuable resource in the universe and it extends life, it expands consciousness, and makes interstellar travel possible. In this new installment, you can create your own story and play as one of several factions, including House Atreides and House Harkonnen, and compete for power over Dune and the spice.
According to SteamStore, players will need to “Scan the landscape for wormsign or risk losing your troops and spice harvesters to titanic sandworms who will burst through the sand dunes to swallow and devour them whole. Best your opponents through political intrigue, crush them in combat, and undermine them with your network of illusive spies.”
you’ll be able to “choose between stealth, political influence, economic domination, or open battle to succeed,” as you’d expect from a 4X game.
The official announcement trailer for Dune: Spice Wars:
The teaser sets the tone by depicting a world at war with a giant sandworm bursting through the sand, followed by the planet being metaphorically held in the palm of someone’s hand as the image draws back.
The early access game will focus on single-player gameplay, with multiplayer and story Campaign options coming later.
The Campaign isn’t finalized yet, but it’ll most likely ” allow players to write their own stories, based on the characters and factions they play.”
The official release date is not known yet but early access is set to be released in early 2022.
Funcom has stated that this is a separate game from the open-world survival game it is working on, which will have nothing to do with Dune: Spice Wars.
We will keep you up to date with the latest news regarding this new installment in the extremely popular Dune franchise.
