Naughty Dog focuses on its Single-Player games

Naughty Dog, the company behind The Last of Us, has revealed that multiple single-player games are currently under development.

“We have more than one ambitious, brand-new single-player game that we’re working on here at Naughty Dog, and we cannot wait to share more about what comes next when we’re ready,” announced The Last of Us and Uncharted studio in a recent blog post. Although the project’s “learnings and investments in technology” are allegedly going to be carried over to future games, the studio buried the little-known fact while announcing the cancellation of an online game set in the world of The Last of Us.

According to Naughty Dog, the multiplayer game was cancelled so that the developer could concentrate on those “ambitious” single-player projects. The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, a $10 next-generation update with a roguelike mode and other enhancements, is set to be released soon by the team.

Apart from that, what might the studio be working on? Upon being questioned about the inescapable sequel to The Last of Us, Neil Druckmann, the director, stated that the team was working on “other projects.” Though the comments obliquely allude to something else that isn’t depressingly zombie-related, that is definitely not a denial.

Naughty Dog might even revisit other treasures from its back catalog, such as the joyful Jak and Daxter series or (even less likely) Uncharted. The most likely choice, though, is to try something completely different. What form that takes is unclear, but anything that avoids fatal fungal infections is something I’ll be happy to see, having spent years rereading the same stories between The Last of Us Part 1, HBO’s adaptation, and now Part 2 Remastered.
