The gift that keeps on giving! As always Xbox steps up to bring us some of the latest and greatest titles.

Microsoft usually announces most Xbox Game Pass games close to their release dates, usually about a week before they arrive. There are instances where some games are announced ahead of time though.

Dragon Quest XI S (December 4th, 2020):

Dragon Quest XI continues the gameplay of previous games in the series, in which players explore worlds and fight against various monsters, including the ability to explore high areas. The game protagonist is a young man who grew up in a serene, quiet town. When he participates in the village’s coming-of-age ceremony, he discovers that he is the reincarnation of a hero that once saved the world, and is burdened with a great mission. He sets off across the world of Erdrea, where he is joined by allies, including a snarky child prodigy, a blunt thief, and an over-the-top entertainer.

Tetris Effect: Connected (November 10th, 2020):

As in the original Tetris game, the player must place tetrominos into a playfield to create complete lines, which are then cleared from the playfield. Tetris Effect adds themes and music across thirty different stages with gameplay tied to the beat of the music. A new “Zone” mechanic allows players to place several blocks at once, allowing the player to clear many lines at once, more than what is possible in conventional Tetris games. The game also includes a meta-game leveling system that leads to new challenges for players as they progress.

The Medium (PC and Xbox Series X, release 2020):

The Medium is a psychological horror game played in third-person as Marianne, a medium who can travel into the spirit realm. Being able to inhabit both worlds aids puzzle solving. Her psychic abilities may also be used against hostile forces and are recharged by interacting with energy spots called spirit wells.

Call of the Sea (2020):

Call of the Sea is an adventure video game played from a first-person perspective. The game is set in the 1930s, and players assume control of Norah (Cissy Jones), who must explore an island set in the Southern Pacific to find her husband who has gone missing after embarking on an expedition. The game does not feature a combat system, and players progress in the game by solving various puzzles.

Confirmed upcoming Xbox Game Pass games due 2021:

Halo Infinite (2021):

Halo Infinite is an upcoming first-person shooter game developed by 343 Industries and published by Xbox Game Studios for Microsoft Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X and Series S.

Master Chief returns in Halo Infinite with “his greatest adventure yet to save humanity”. The storyline of Halo Infinite will be “much more human”, with the Master Chief playing a more central role than in Halo 5: Guardians. The E3 2018 trailer indicated that the story will be set on a Halo ring that has mysteriously suffered damage and also showcased the design of Master Chief’s MJOLNIR armor to return to the design seen in Halo 2 and Halo 3. The Banished, a violent mercenary group that splintered off of the former Covenant alien alliance first seen in Halo Wars 2, are shown to be enemies.

Psychonauts 2 (2021):

Psychonauts 2 will be a third-person platform game similar in gameplay to its predecessor. The player will control Raz, a newly graduated Psychonaut with powerful psychic abilities, as he delves into the minds of others. The player will use “Psi-Powers”, such as telekinesis, pyrokinesis, and levitation, in combination with more common platform game elements, to explore the mental worlds of several non-player characters.

The Gunk (Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC, coming September 2021):

The Gunk is a game about two friends who run a small scavenging outfit together, and who travel from one space rock to another in search for resources they can harvest and sell. One day they land on a planet that looks dead from a distance, turns out to be unlike any other they’ve set foot on. A slimy parasite — or gunk — covers vast areas and seems to corrupt the otherwise vibrant nature and wildlife. It’s clear that they must fight this gunk to understand what’s happened and to save the dying planet. But this also creates a rift between them; on one hand, the planet will die if we don’t rid the planet of the gunk. On the other, we’ve got problems of our own and surely this isn’t our fight, to begin with.

Fable (Xbox Series X and PC, release timing TBC):

As role-playing video games, the Fable series constructs the development of a protagonist controlled by the player, and the development is related to the same character’s interaction with the game world. A major part of this interaction is for the Fable series related to interaction with people, be it conversation, storytelling, education, trading, gaming, courting, and relationships, or fighting. The player is able to develop the protagonist following several parameters, such as magic, strength, and social skills. The player may also direct the moral quality of the protagonist, so that skills may be developed in equal terms and conditions both in the negative and positive field.

In addition to this basis of the gameplay, some of the versions focus on set quests that together give the protagonist the opportunity to develop, as well as unveiling strands of the story of the game.

Forza Motorsport (Xbox Series X and PC, release timing TBC):

Forza is a series of simulation racing video games. The series seeks to emulate the performance and handling characteristics of many real-life production, modified, and racing cars.

Microsoft Flight Simulator (PC release August 18th, 2020, Xbox release TBC):

Flight Simulator simulates the entire Earth using textures and data from Bing Maps, whilst three-dimensional representations of the world’s features are generated by Microsoft Azure technology. Through the use of the Azure cloud to render visuals, enhance visual fidelity, and simulate real-world data and effects, as well as calculate physics, the title has been viewed as the culmination of Microsoft’s “power of the cloud” mantra.

State of Decay 3 (Xbox Series X and PC, release timing TBC):

State of Decay 3 is a horror survival game sequel to State of Decay 2 which is currently being developed by Undead Labs but has no set release date.

Scorn (Xbox Series X, release TBA):

The player controls a skinless humanoid, lost in a nightmarish world filled with odd creatures and macabre tapestry, resembling a living techno-organic structure composed of steel, flesh, and bone. The player will explore different interconnected regions in a non-linear fashion, searching for answers that will explain more about the game’s world.

The game, thus far, presents two main weapons: a pistol and a three-barrel rifle that fire some forms of organic spikes. The player starts with the pistol, a 6-shot weapon dealing mild damage to the in-game enemies. It appears to be completely organic, beginning with the mouth-looking base for the weapon which can be opened to let the pistol itself be removed and exchanged for the shotgun. The shotgun is a 3-shot weapon that deals considerable damage to enemies close-up, but the damage drops at long distances. The shotgun is composed of the same materials as the pistol, appearing to be made from organic matter.

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II (Xbox Series X, Xbox One, release TBC):

Inspired by Norse mythology and Celtic culture, the game follows Senua, a Pict warrior who must make her way to Helheim by defeating otherworldly entities and facing their challenges, in order to rescue the soul of her dead lover from the goddess Hela.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 is an upcoming fourth installment in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series. Very little is known about the game as of yet, except for the presumed date of release which is set to 2021.

The game was originally announced in 2010, less than a year after the release of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat, but the development stopped in 2012 and the game was subsequently canceled. In 2018, it was announced that the development has been restarted.

Starfield (Xbox Series X and PC, release timing TBC):

Starfield is an upcoming first-person role-playing single-player space-themed adventure game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. The game was formally announced during Bethesda’s E3 Press Conference in 2018. The game is described as a wholly new, next-generation first-person experience set in an entirely new space-themed world. A short teaser trailer was shown with few details.

Warhammer 40,000: Darktide (Xbox Series X and PC, release TBC):

Warhammer 40,000: Darktide is an upcoming first-person action-adventure video game. Set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, the game will use a similar formula to that used in Fatshark’s Warhammer: Vermintide 2 in which four players cooperate to defeat periodic waves of AI-controlled enemies.
