The Gears Of War franchise will grind onto Netflix in a double whammy of Anime series and a movie adaptation
Gears Of War is a highly popular game series best known for its third-person shooter video games. They have supplemented these with spin-off video game titles, a DC comic book series, seven novels, a board game adaptation, and various merchandise.
The Hollywood Reporter made the announcement that Netflix has nabbed the rights to adapt the game franchise into an anime series and a full-length movie.
This comes after months of lengthy negotiations with The Coalition who developed the games and the media outlet Netflix.
There have been previous attempts to adapt the series since its release. It now seems Netflix will be the one to actually pull it off.
Here is the official tweet by Netflix regarding the situation:
Gears of War was released 16 years ago today and to mark the occasion, Netflix has partnered with The Coalition to adapt the @GearsofWar video game saga into a live action feature film, followed by an adult animated series — with the potential for more stories to follow! pic.twitter.com/3zInFSnUu4

There aren’t any filmmakers or producers attached to the project yet. After numerous major studios have tried to adapt the series, the video game franchise is getting a new start.
The storyline of the series is set on a planet on the brink of societal collapse. when the Locust, a horrific threat represented by underground creatures, brings humanity to the point of extinction.
Marcus Fenix is a disgraced soldier who now commands the ragtag fireteam known as Delta Squad. Which will be in charge of organizing humanity’s final defense.
Since New Line briefly acquired the rights to the Gears film in 2007, Hollywood has been vying for a piece of the action.
For film executive, Scott Stuber contracted to make an adaptation during his independent producer days in the middle of the 2010s.
The Netflix deal must be especially satisfying. Universal put up that iteration, but it never made it past the screenwriting stage.
The League of Legends show Arcane and the anime Cyberpunk 2077 are just two of the popular video game franchises that have recently made their way to Netflix. Gears of War is the newest addition.
There are other video game adaptations worked on by the streaming service. These include a live-action BioShock film, a Horizon Zero Dawn TV series, and an Assassin’s Creed series.
Stay tuned to find out more as we do. Based on the popularity of the games, the new adaptations are bound to draw a lot of attention.
