According to internal Microsoft documents, it is highly possible that IO Interactive’s forthcoming online fantasy RPG might become exclusive to Xbox.
The disclosure of court documents during the FTC’s efforts to impede Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard has unveiled that IO Interactive, the developer behind Hitman, has an upcoming game exclusive to Xbox.
Project Dragon is planned for release on Xbox Series X|S and PC, with publishing responsibilities falling under Xbox Game Studios.
Back in April 2021, Windows Central initially reported that IO Interactive had partnered with Microsoft to develop a new “dragon-themed IP” that was anticipated to be published as an exclusive title for Xbox, produced by Microsoft’s first-party studios.
Subsequently, in February of the following year, IO Interactive itself confirmed its involvement in the development of an online fantasy RPG.
Although not officially confirmed, it is highly probable that this RPG aligns with the project mentioned in the aforementioned Microsoft documents.
The company stated:
“We are building a new world, a new IP – an online fantasy RPG. A world and a game built from the core to entertain players and expand for many years to come.
For many, this journey is also a deeply personal one that began long before we started making games for a living – and it started with the fantasy genre.
From the ‘Fighting Fantasy’ books compelling you to choose your path, alone, against wizards, lizards, and thief kings. To the togetherness, camaraderie, agony, and delight found around the tabletop.”
IO Interactive’s fantasy RPG has divulged only limited information thus far, but the studio has disclosed that the project draws inspiration from gamebooks such as Fighting Fantasy. This genre marks a noteworthy departure from IOI’s most renowned franchise, Hitman.
