Layoffs At Marvel Snap Publisher Might Lead To Possible Closure

Nuverse, ByteDance’s gaming arm, may be shut down

ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, appears to be discontinuing several projects within its Nuverse gaming arm. Nuverse is best known for publishing Marvel Snap, as well as Ragnarok X: Next Generation and One Piece: Blood Routes.

According to Reuters, ByteDance has told employees to stop working on unreleased games by December, affecting hundreds of workers. Furthermore, ByteDance is reportedly attempting to exit from games that it has already released. While the casual gaming brand Ohayoo will reportedly continue to be featured on TikTok’s sister app, Douyin, it also appears that ByteDance will not be returning to the gaming market anytime soon.

A ByteDance spokesperson told Reuters in a statement, “We regularly review our businesses and make adjustments to center on long-term strategic growth areas. Following a recent review, we’ve made the difficult decision to restructure our gaming business.”

Marvel Snap was a critical success, and it was named one of the top mobile games of 2022. This August, it received native PC support via Steam. ByteDance’s potential layoffs continue a troubling trend of widespread layoffs in the video game industry this year. Amazon Games recently laid off 180 employees, and other major companies such as Bungie, BioWare, and Ubisoft have also reduced their workforce.
