Fans Of the Yu Gi Oh card game are signing a petition to include the game as an Olympic sport.

Do you love Yu Gi Oh? Can you play the card game like a pro? Then maybe you should add your name to the newly circulated petition calling for the game to be an Olympic sport.

One megafan Xiran Jay Zhao has started a petition for the International Olympics committee on Change.org which is now sitting at 11,238 signatures.

The Olympics are currently in full swing in Tokyo amidst the Covid pandemic proving there is no killing the human spirit. Many new sports have been added to the roster this time around including Baseball, Surfing, Skateboarding, sport climbing, and karate with Breakdancing being approved for the 2024 Olympic games.

With all these new sports being added to the roster it just makes sense that the very popular Yu Gi Oh card game could be among the new contenders for Olympic Sports.

According to Xiran Jay Zhao, the card game utilizes an athlete’s strengths in many of the same ways that other Olympic sports do, including dexterity through drawing cards, athleticism by playing them, and endurance throughout a Yu-Gi-Oh Championship Series round of ten.

The petition has already amassed a perhaps surprising amount of signatures and is gaining even more traction leaving us to wonder if this could become a reality and we could in the future see the Yu Gi Oh card game being played for the whole world to see.

It has also called to question what exactly Is a “sport”. The word “sport” is described in the dictionary as “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.” So does the Yu Gi Oh card game fall into this category in the eyes of the Olympic Committee? Only time will tell.

If this particular card game gets a show in and then why not others such as the highly popular Magic: The Gathering and the Pokémon card game and where will the committee draw the line.

Regarding the highly popular Yu Gi Oh franchise, Konami has recently announced three new games for the franchise that will launch in the coming months.

If the Olympic Committee decides to include the card game in the Games, it will most likely be a long time before we see it on the schedule.

If you are a fan and want to add your signature to this petition you can visit the Change.org site directly to have your voice heard.
