PS5 won’t Be Backward Compatible With PS3, PS2, Or PS1

For those that were anticipating playing old PS games on your new PS5, disappointment awaits.

With all the hype surrounding the upcoming release of the PS5, many people are excited about all the new features including the announcement that the new PS5 will be backward compatible. Backward compatibility meaning that you would be able to play older games from previous consoles on the PS5.

According to a FAQ on Ubisoft’s website, the new PS5 will not be backward-compatible with the PlayStation 1, PlayStation 2, or even the PlayStation 3. It seems that Sony has only equipped the PS5 with backward-compatibility for the PS4 and its many titles.

Even though Sony had never actually promised us this feature for PS1,  PS2, or the PS3, but reports from July speculated as much. These reports were based on patent filings in Japan and did not come from Sony itself. Giving us hope that our older PS games would now be compatible with the new PS5, but alas there is no evidence to support this.

Sony’s coyness on the subject could mean that backward compatibility beyond the PS4 isn’t part of Sony’s plan for its new console, or that Ubisoft isn’t able to say otherwise just yet.

Even though the PS5 will be backward compatible with the PS4, it will apparently not support all the PS4 titles, only a select number.

As for the new Xbox Series X, Microsoft has already confirmed that it will be backward compatible with the majority of Xbox One games, as well as all the Xbox 360 and original Xbox games that are already compatible with their current-gen consoles. Microsoft will be adding more games to the list of games that will be backward compatible once the Xbox Series X is launched.

Sony will be launching its PS5 later this year in digital and physical form. Sony has yet to confirm its release date, price, and lineup but has launched a program where you can apply to be one of the first to pre-order a PS5. Spider-Man: Miles Morales is also currently set to launch this year, while Insomniac’s other PS5 title, Ratchet, and Clank: Rift Apart, is said to be coming in the PS5’s “launch window.”

We now await more news from Sony regarding all the hear-say surrounding the next-gen console and will keep you up to date with the latest news as it comes in.
