Starfield: What We Know So Far

Starfield-What-We-Know-So-Far

Many ARPG and space genre lovers are looking forward to Bethesda’s new ARPG; here’s what we know thus far.

Starfield was first announced by Bethesda in 2018 but new details surfaced in a teaser trailer at E3 2021. It will be Bethesda’s first original RPG in 25 years.

Starfield was described as: “a wholly new, next-generation experience set in an entirely new space-themed world.”

The game is set in “The Settled Systems”, a region that stretches outward from the Solar System for around 50 light-years.

One of the many planets featured in the game.

There is not much information on the actual storyline of the game but the official Steamstore overview states:

” Starfield is the first new universe in 25 years from Bethesda Game Studios, the award-winning creators of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Fallout 4. In this next-generation role-playing game set amongst the stars, create any character you want and explore with unparalleled freedom as you embark on an epic journey to answer humanity’s greatest mystery.”

Starfield: official announcement trailer:

We do know that the story takes place about 300 years into the future and centres around a space organization called “ Constellation”.

Todd Howard himself said:

”while constellation is the primary group players will be part of in Starfield it is one of many players will encounter and can join throughout their journey”.

Only a few gameplay features have been confirmed so far such as being able to “create any character you want and explore with unparalleled freedom.”  You will also be able to choose your character’s background and customizations can affect how your character’s story unfolds.

There will reportedly be more than 150,000 lines of dialog which is more than twice as many lines as Skyrim which had 60,000 and more than Fallout 4’s 111,000 lines of dialog.

Todd Howard himself confirmed that the game will be playable in first and third-person perspectives like Fallout 3,4 and Skyrim as is the game style Bethesda seems to gravitate towards.

The NPC’S included in the game will be of Human, alien, and robot origin.

Todd Howard said of the gameplay:

”We like to put you in a world where we’re not dragging you by the nose and saying you must do x, y, and Z and that it’s okay if you want to test the game’s boundaries.”

Starfield places you in the cockpit of amazing starships.

In an interview art director, Matt Carofano said of the game:

“A lot of our games are about exploration, and that’s the ultimate exploration, is what’s out there? What’s past Earth? Whereas Skyrim is sort of epic fantasy, this is a more grounded game and a more grounded setting about exploration…”

One of the most recent teasers deconstructs the ‘Settled Systems’ region of space, a 50-light-year radius around our own solar system where humanity has spread out.

It is split between two major factions, the United Colonies and the Freestar Collective, who have reached an uneasy truce following a previous battle. It also mentions some of the additional dangers the player can face, such as “Ecliptic mercenaries, Crimson Fleet pirates, aggressive Spacers, or even House Va’Ruun’s rabid religious zealots.”
