Headhunter will be the first in the series to take the 3D leap
In case you aren’t familiar with the title, SteamWorld is a game series playing out the adventures of a steam-driven race of robots in a post-apocalyptic steampunk world.
There are currently five SteamWorld games available on a variety of platforms, with another one installment in development (and possibly another three).

The SteamWorld Series
Although this is a series’ title, it has no set genre. Each game has a mostly different approach as to what the developers, Image & Form, are targeting in terms of experience while keeping the atmosphere and iconic style and take.
Each of the games take place in the same universe although the connection between each of the games is not always obvious. Image & Form took the liberty of drawing up a timeline to iron out and clarify how the events play out at what point for us.

SteamWorld Headhunter
SteamWorld Headhunter is diverting from the usual sprites (“flat graphics”) with the false-depth perception using artificial parallax, in other words, it won’t be the usual 2-dimensional setting, but will be the first in the series to be fully 3-dimensional in gameplay.

As previously with the SteamWorld universe, Headhunter will be set in the post-apocalyptic steampunk Wild West, dominated by steam-powered automata.
This action-adventure will be quite a colourful expedition played out in third-person co-op; unlike the previously favoured rogue-like and turn-based RPG styles.

Although there isn’t yet much released about this upcoming title, we do know that Headhunter is directly following up from SteamWorld Dig 2. We also know that there will quite literally be heads flung about, hence “Headhunter”, so there’s that.

A Little Extra
In the meantime, seeing as though so little is currently known about Headhunter, we can confirm that Image & Form will be launching The Gunk on the 16th of December 2021 for Xbox One, Xbox Series S & Series X, and PC.
The Gunk is another upcoming third-person action-adventure.
