Tencent and Sony have acquired shares in Gaming giant FromSoftware
The two companies now own a combined share of 30.34% holdings in FromSoftware with Tencent taking 16.25 % of that and Sony Interactive now owning 14.09 % shares. The Kadokawa company from Japan still owns the majority share though owning 69.66%.
FromSoftware is best known for its extremely popular Souls-like games such as Bloodborne, the Dark Souls franchise, and most recently the very popular Elden Ring.
The announcement came from Kadokawa corporation which says the aim of the sale is to “proactively invest in the development of more powerful game UP […] to strengthen FromSoftware’s development capabilities.”

Tencent’s “strength in its capabilities to develop and deploy mobile games and other network technologies in the global market” is also mentioned, suggesting that FromSoftware may be considering mobile gaming in some capacity.
Together, Sony and Tencent invested 36.4 billion Yen (about $250 million USD) in From Software.
The agreement will enable From Software to diversify its creative endeavors beyond video games and into other media, with a current market value of little under $1 billion USD. New games based on both fresh and established intellectual property will benefit from the funding as well.
While none of the companies involved have outlined specific plans for the move it is safe to say we can expect more news in the future as this is still a very new acquisition.
The deal’s effects on Kadokawa Corporation’s financial performance in 2023 are projected to be “minimal,” according to Kadokawa Corporation, while it is still unclear what we may expect from the deal at this time.
As more and more firms merge to create better and more popular games for fans, you can be sure that we will be keeping an eye out for any fresh developments in this significant industry news so stay tuned.
