Terraria Reveals Visible Fish After 12 Years

You can finally reel in that big one

Engaging with Terraria usually involves embracing the pixelated universe’s rules: certain fish inhabit honey, all fish remain mysteriously unseen until captured, and defeating adversaries earns you generous treasure-filled bags. These fundamental principles have been mostly unchanged in the 12-year-old action-adventure sandbox game. However, a notable shift occurred this week. The game’s developer, Re-Logic, disclosed a significant update in a forum thread: in the forthcoming 1.4.5 update scheduled for 2024, fish in Terraria will no longer be invisible and will become visible.

Re-Logic developer Loki wrote: “We are not sure how the fish in Terraria stayed invisible all this time. Now you can see what you might be reeling in while fishing!”

A player walks up to a blue body of water in the rain. He throws in his fishing line, and a few fish begin to gather as his lure dangles on the water’s surface. You can see their various silhouettes vying for the bait through the water until one fairly tall one emerges victorious. The screen indicates the player has caught some bass when he yanks his line.

Fishing in Terraria

The fishing experience used to be more exclusive than that. After the 1.4.5 update, players will still be able to drop their lines into completely opaque puddles of lava, honey, and water. However, they would encounter zero indications as to whether they had entangled themselves in trash or fish, and if they had, what kind of fish it was. Although sonar potions—8-minute-long buffs that revealed the names of hooked fish—offered players a brief reprieve from fishing obscurity, Re-Logic’s recent decision to permanently display all fish should improve players’ performance in the mini-game.

Apart from that, Re-Logic hinted at a Terraria filter in the style of a CRT in a future update. “Things will start to wind down for the year once we get into the second half of December, but we are planning to finish the year strong in order to give us a ton of momentum as we head into 2024.”
