Could Nintendo consider making Super Mario RPG 2? The original game’s director hopes so
Super Mario RPG: The Legend of the Seven Stars’ director has expressed interest in making a sequel. This month, Nintendo released a remake of Super Mario RPG for the Nintendo Switch, which has proven to be quite popular. With so many Nintendo fans returning to this 1996 title, the game’s original director has stated that he would like to create a sequel as his final project before retiring.
In an interview with MinnMax, director Chihiro Fujioka stated that he still wants to make a sequel to Super Mario RPG. Fujioka previously worked on Nintendo’s Mario & Luigi RPG series, but he stated that he would like to create one more RPG adventure for Mario only. To that end, he stated that he still hopes to make a sequel to The Legend of the Seven Stars and hinted that he may have ideas for the story of this game.
“So, in my career, I’ve been involved in a lot of games and you know, I would really like my final one to be another Mario RPG game, if possible,” Fujioka said. “I think Mario & Luigi is cool but I would like to go back and create a Mario RPG where you’re only controlling Mario.”
If there is hope for a Super Mario RPG 2 in the future, it must be found in the new remake of the original game. Many video game publishers have previously released remasters or remakes to gauge interest in a product before releasing a new entry. Keeping this in mind, if Super Mario RPG performs well on Switch, Nintendo may look to hire Fujioka to create the sequel. If the game fails to meet expectations, Nintendo may decide to discontinue the series.
