The developers have said that “there is so much demand” when it comes to the game
Because so many people are still purchasing the game, Terraria designer and developer Andrew Spinks says it’s challenging to begin work on a new project.
“After 12 years the game still sells like hotcakes,” Spinks wrote on his Twitter account which has now been deactivated. “There is so much demand it makes it hard to move on.”
The next major patch for Terraria, 1.4.5, will be the first since 2020, and it will feature crossover content with Metroidvania Dead Cells, a rogue-like game. 1.4.5, dubbed the sixth final update by developer Re-Logic, is a running joke on the numerous changes the game has made to Terraria since 1.4.0 was released in 2020 and was intended to be the game’s final release.
Ted Murphy, head of business strategy at Re-Logic, tells PC Gamer that the game’s final update was really intended to be version 1.3, which was released in 2015. Since then, Re-Logic has kept updating Terraria with new material because, well, players and buyers continue to support the game.
Since its release, Terraria has enjoyed tremendous success. It had sold over 35 million copies by 2021, and the previous year it became the first independent game to receive one million positive Steam reviews. Is 1.4.5 the “final update” for Terraria? Time will tell, but given previous performance, it doesn’t appear likely.
