Todd Garner, did you get a first look at the Netherrealm in Mortal Kombat 2?

Mortal Kombat 2 filming resumed this month, and the sequel’s cast has been spotted on location in Australia. Since then, producer Todd Garner has been posting “kryptic” images on his Twitter account, including behind-the-scenes photos of the set, lighting, and other details. Today, Garner offered another, which is causing a lot of speculation among Mortal Kombat fans. The image depicts the ground in an undisclosed location, with dark red lighting. Many fans speculate that this is a location in Outworld, while others believe it is in Netherrealm.

Readers can form their own opinions by viewing the Tweet from Garner embedded below.

Garner, predictably, has not acknowledged or responded to any of these Tweets, so there is no way of knowing if these predictions are correct. Fans are clearly having a good time with it, and many have expressed their gratitude for Garner’s Tweets since production resumed. There’s clearly a lot of excitement among Mortal Kombat fans, and even these hazy images are making the wait bearable. Garner should have a lot more to say in the coming weeks!

Netherrealm and Noob Saibot:

If the teased location is the Netherrealm, it makes sense given that Noob Saibot will appear in the film. In the Mortal Kombat games, Scorpion kills the original Sub-Zero Bi-Han, and his soul descends to the Netherrealm. Quan Chi stripped Bi-Han of his humanity there, and he became Noob Saibot.

Sub-Zero was similarly killed by Scorpion and his descendant Cole Young in the 2021 Mortal Kombat film. Sub-Zero actor Joe Taslim will return for Mortal Kombat 2, while Damon Herriman has been cast as Quan Chi. The set photo shared by Garner could be Netherrealm, where Bi-Han is reborn, or it could be something entirely different. For the time being, fans will have to wait to see what else is revealed.

Mortal Kombat 2’s Release Date:

Mortal Kombat 2 does not yet have a release date, but it is expected to arrive sometime in 2024. The previous Mortal Kombat film received mixed reviews, but there appears to be a lot of excitement surrounding the sequel. There could be several reasons for this, including the casting of actor Karl Urban as Johnny Cage. Johnny Cage has been one of the franchise’s most popular fighters for decades, but he did not appear in the previous film; instead, the character was teased at the very end. Now the character will appear, and it will be played by a well-known actor!
