Described as “promising” this new small-scale War Game has our attention.
The Troop is technically still in early access, but those that have played it are calling it “promising” and describe the gameplay as “enjoyable”.
The developer is Giant Flame and the game is being published by PLA Studios. The official release date for the early access version of the game was the 22nd of December of 2021.
The Troop is a story-driven wargame set during World War II’s notorious D-Day, focusing on British and Canadian forces fighting across Normandy from the dawn of the invasion.

The Troop is described as a “game” and not a simulation, as its aim is not to simulate the events but puts you in control of the troops and infantry.
There is no realism here as in CoD etc but some of the features include:
- Simple, complete control – You have complete control over your units’ actions.
- Choose your difficulty – Instead of one difficulty setting players can control a variety of feature and information settings.

The developers had this to say about their beloved game:
“The Troop is born from a life long passion for WW2 history and turn-based games. Our aim is to give a little glimpse of that history through an enjoyable challenge.
The events depicted are set in the broad reality of the historical campaigns, the missions themselves however are fictional and geared towards an enjoyable challenge rather than a strict depiction of history.
We hope only to do justice to the spirit of those countless memoirs and after-action reports that survive and continue to fascinate us.”
The Troop is a game for those fans of anything War-related and especially this particular period of history. If you’re searching for the blood and gore of a typical War Game, this isn’t it. Instead of run and gun, this game emphasizes methodical and strategic gaming.

The AI is refreshingly competitive and seems to play by the same rules that the players do which makes it more of a challenge and more enjoyable in this regard.
Giant Flame intends to keep The Troop in early access for about a year, no doubt to work out all the bugs and kinks that the players find. They are aiming to release the full game in December of 2022 or even early next year.
As such we will be keeping an eye on this little War Game gem that is bound to attract the attention of many a war genre fan.
