CD Projekt Red has confirmed it will be remaking The Witcher and will be using Unreal Engine 5
Earlier this month CD Projekt Red announced that among five new games that it is working on is a true remake of The Witcher.
The game was previously dubbed “Canis Majoris” and will be a “true” remake. The developer said that the game will be “rebuilt from the ground up” in Unreal Engine 5.
The game is already in the early stages of development according to CD Projekt Red.
The company warned though:
“We want to do this right, so please be patient — it’s gonna be a while until we can share more details.”
The developer announced the news via an official Twitter post:
We're thrilled to reveal that, together with @Fools_Theory, we're working on remaking The Witcher using Unreal Engine 5 (codename: Canis Majoris)!

Adam Badowski stated in an official announcement post:
“The Witcher is where it all started for us, for CD Projekt Red. It was the first game we made, ever, and it was a big moment for us then.
Going back to this place and remaking the game for the next generation of gamers to experience it feels just as big, if not bigger.
Collaborating with Fool’s Theory on the project is just as exciting, as some of the people there have been previously involved in The Witcher games.
They know the source material well, they know how much gamers have been looking forward to seeing the remake happen, and they know how to make incredible and ambitious games.
And although it will take some time before we’re ready to share more about and from the game, I know it’ll be worth the wait.”
The Witcher was originally released in 2007 and was a runaway success. The game will be made in Unreal Engine 5 at a Poland-based studio “Fools Theory” which has supported it since 2015.
This game is an adaptation of Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski’s series of fantasy novels of the same name, published from 1990 to 1999.
When the game was first developed they used BioWare’s Aurora Engine. The game was only released for PC back then and was never launched on consoles.
They launched the sequel in 2011 and an enhanced edition of it in 2012 for PC and Xbox 360. They used the studio’s Proprietary REDengine for this. The most recent game in the series Wild Hunt also uses REDengine.
Chief executive of Fool’s Theory Jakub Rokosz said of the remake:
“I am very happy that my professional path has crossed again with fellow developers, from the time of working together on The Witcher 2 and The Witcher 3. Especially when it’s a remake of a project that is so close to our hearts. Our goal is to give players another great game from the iconic Witcher series.”
The Witcher Remake has unfortunately not been confirmed for release on any specific platforms yet and the release date is also a mystery for now.
