Ubisoft Implements Layoffs, Impacting Global Publishing And Asia-Pacific Divisions

This move will cause a lot of waves in the gaming industry

Ubisoft has confirmed the termination of 45 positions in its latest wave of layoffs, affecting its global publishing and Asia-Pacific divisions. The decision comes as part of the company’s efforts to reorganize these structures to improve operational efficiency and adapt to market dynamics.

This announcement follows a series of industry-wide layoffs that have persisted since the previous year. Notable instances include significant staff reductions at Gearbox, Sega, Certain Infinity, and Maxis Games. Ubisoft itself underwent a massive layoff of over 1,000 employees in November 2023, reflecting a trend echoed across the gaming landscape. Other major players like Microsoft and Sony have also announced substantial cuts in their respective divisions.

Ubisoft’s restructuring endeavors aim to streamline operations and enhance collective efficiency for long-term success. The company expressed gratitude for the contributions of the affected employees and pledged comprehensive support during this transition period.

In the midst of these organizational changes, Ubisoft continues to push forward with its game development projects. Recent releases such as Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown and Skull and Bones have marked the beginning of the year. Despite modest player numbers, Skull and Bones achieved record-breaking playtime figures for the company. Shooter XDefiant faced a delay beyond March, while titles like Star Wars Outlaws and an Assassin’s Creed game under the codename Red remain on track for release within the fiscal year.

Ubisoft plans to unveil further details about its lineup for the fiscal year 2024-2025 in May, shedding light on its future gaming endeavors amidst the ongoing restructuring efforts.
