Crewmate, there is an imposter among us…
Some key points that this game offers:
- Brief, anonymous interaction between other players
- Access to 3 international servers, plus hosting your own customizable scenarios
- User-friendly interface
- Mischief and sabotage!
- Play in teams of 4 – 10 players at one time
- Laugh out loud at the mischief and dynamics of the group as you all try to figure out who’s the imposter
Gameplay & Controls:
Controls in the game are very simple and easy to get the hang of. I chose to review the mobile aspect of this game and found that whipping out my phone to enjoy an hour of misadventure on my lunch break far better than opening up my clunky laptop just for that. Interaction with objects (or tasks) is only a matter of tapping once on it and tapping again to activate it.
Interacting with other players adds to the quirkiness of this game, although you do need to have lightning-fast typing skills when it comes to the matter of sussing out each other in emergency meetings. Other than when experiencing lag, the gameplay is quite smooth, and everything happens in real time.
I also quite enjoy being able to share server codes if I have personal friends who want to play on the same server. The only flaw I found here was when trying to quickly switch between WhatsApp and the game to share codes: I would always get kicked out of the server due to no ping response.
Try to figure out, as a team, who’s killing your crew mates and vote The Imposter out to win the game, before it is too late…
Graphics:
The graphics are very cartoonish and flat, which only adds to its charm. You can pick a colour for your avatar, but you cannot be the same colour as another player.
You view the game from a top-down perspective and the screen scrolls according to where you move your avatar. Luckily, because the graphics run on minimal specs, you could even play this on a potato laptop (unless, of course, your laptop is too slow!)
Sounds:
Basic sci-fi sound effects add to the setting of a space station or planet, and the eerie track that plays on the main menu sets the mysterious atmosphere of the entire game. Depending on where you are tasking, you’ll notice an appropriate white noise; be it the hum of electronics, the hollow drone of the hallways, or just the pitter-patter of moon boots on metal.
The developers were sure to add the expected “whoosh” for doors that you will physically need to open, as well as the odd “beeps” and “boops” – that’s pretty much everything that makes up the sci-fi genre.
Replayability:
As with any online game, it is great until you, the player, decide it’s not fun anymore. The interesting people you come across give the game a different dynamic each time you log in, and that’s the main draw card. I haven’t come across any toxic players…yet… I am not a big online gamer, and with my limited connectivity, I found this game to be extremely entertaining!
However, I can’t see anyone spending more than an hour at a time on this one. It’s more of a quick entertainment fix and is great for passing time if you’re sitting alone at a bar, coffee shop, or on your lunch break. You can gather a group of personal friends and set up your own scenarios and that gives the game a bit more depth.
MGR Gaming’s Conclusions:
Spoilers Ahead:
Running around in a hazmat suit that resembles a brightly coloured jellybean or decapitated telly-tubby is the latest craze among the online gaming community. A simple “whodunnit” concept set far out on 3 intergalactic maps. Because everyone is susceptible to being The Imposter due to an intelligent random selection by the game itself, the phrases “no hard feelings” and “GG” are accurately conveyed after each scenario.
This game does rely on decent ping, and you can see your ping speed at the top of the game screen. Depending on where you are, some international servers might not work as well as others; and unfortunately, this game also is victim to hacking and this can ruin a good time. The best opinion is to leave the server as soon as you catch wind of a hacker being present.
A fun quirk is that if your avatar dies at the hands of the imposter, it will stay in the game as a ghost and you can still complete your assigned tasks to finish the level before the imposter kills everyone.
Also, as a ghost, you can chat with other ghosts outside of emergency meetings. You obviously can’t reveal the imposter to the rest of the team, but this makes it fun to watch them figure it out.
A last note: If you’re finding that you have to switch between Discord or Whatsapp to chat with your friends while playing, then I would recommend playing this on PC and not mobile.
