Not only is the adventure bigger so is the chaos…and all of this on one grand city sized scale.
Some key points that this game offers:
- Massive cast of characters from the Batman comics.
- Massive Open World.
- Improved exploration controls and manoeuvrability.
- Excellent story line and continuation from its predecessor.
- Experience Batman like never before…
Gameplay & Controls:
Batman: Arkham City can be played with keyboard and mouse or with the controller; as before it purely comes down to your personal preference. The gameplay on either of these methods is comfortable to use and there are some remap options to customize your key layouts and other settings.
The stakes got a whole lot bigger and the plot even more sinister than before… Unlike Batman: Arkham Asylum we have some more free reign on where to go and what to do this time around.
As the game title states Arkham City. We are no longer bound to a mere Asylum but an entire Island City…, full of criminal scum all waiting to receive some Bat-Justice… You will run into some old acquaintances from the previous game and several new faces, all of whom have come out to play with the Bat.
The Riddler is back once again with several new challenges and hidden secrets, however this time around getting all of his trophies will require some effort and brainwork. They are no longer hidden up or behind walls, this time around they require some ingenuity to obtain.
Once of the best improvements is the exploration mechanic updates that were implemented. Whilst gliding you can grapple to ledges and other high reach areas. You can grab onto ledges as you glide towards them and manoeuvrability while scaling surfaces is also a lot smoother.
Graphics:
Jaw droppingly gorgeous; for a game of this size and scale; plus being an open world environment, the view is simply spectacular. Whether you are inside one of the many buildings tracking down your target or gliding through the night sky, the view is always gorgeous.
A lot of detail was invested into Arkham City to ensure that all the smaller things one does not usually notice gets noticed and to ensure that they all paint a pretty gorgeous picture. Broken down buildings, scalable surfaces, the numerous thugs you face off against. Each of these elements have their own unique features and appearances.
Buildings all have their own sizes and surfaces to traverse on. Whether it’s Jokers thugs or Two Face’s thugs, they all have their own unique appearances based off of their bosses, and within each faction there are a variety of different thugs.
The fighting scenes and animations are just as gorgeous to behold and partake in this time around with more combo’s and finishers to make use off.
To truly appreciate all that Arkham City offers you have to experience it for yourself.
Sounds:
Gliding through the night sky isn’t just a pretty sight, the background is filled with sirens wailing in the distance, people screaming for help, and thugs mouthing off at each other. There are so many other smaller sounds and noises that adds to the liveliness of the City. This experience is not just a mere experience, but it is entirely memorable, once again you get to truly soak in what it means to be Batman… to hear all that is wrong and then setting off to fix the wrongs one at a time.
Character voice overs are just as impeccable as the character designs, works of art that are totally captivating… You simply can’t get enough of it.
Replayability:
Batman: Arkham City features a New Game Plus mode where you start the game again once you finished the main campaign. There are several features that carry over into the New Game Plus mode making life easier and harder…
Just like before, there are numerable extra challenges that get unlocked as you progress through the game giving you ample replay value.
MGR Gaming’s Conclusions:
Spoilers ahead:
Batman: Arkham City broke new grounds, Arkham Asylum set a pretty high bar for Superhero games, but Batman: Arkham City went and set that bar even higher this time.
There is so much more to do this time around, beside for the main quest line we have numerous side quests that await discovery. Several new enemies to play with and so many new gadgets to upgrade and try out.
The larger city with the upgraded exploration controls really make for one fun gaming experience. Riddler’s new mechanics regarding finding all his trophies are another welcome sight that tests your skills once again.
This beauty has so much but this is where I leave you.
