A nice little Indie Adventure lies in wait…
Some key points that this game offers:
- Beautifully hand drawn art style.
- Permadeath for that extra challenge.
- City Building and upgrading.
- Six unique worlds to find, explore and conquer each crafted in their own brilliant theme.
- Family legacies.
Gameplay & Controls:
The controls are pretty much mouse only, using the left mouse to click where your character moves, and by moving it can be in one of four directions, up, down, left or right unless one of those paths are obstructed by the edge of a map or an immovable object.
Lastly over certain buildings such as towns or shops you can click to enter moving into those towns or buildings, this may seem very shallow. I do ask that you keep an open mind, this is a minor indie game that may not have a lot of depth, but it is still one fun experience with some unique gameplay mechanics.
Graphics:
The graphics are beautifully hand drawn with a lot of artistic effort behind it, the game really looks like a piece of art; each area has its own theme, look and feel such as the swamp area with its murky water and gloomy grassy surfaces.
Each area also has a whole bunch of different characters that the players fight against, some bandits, others ghosts, and a few other creatures, each also uniquely created having their own looks and style. In the options side of things, we can choose from several different resolution options along with an option for special effects and lastly Window/ Fullscreen mode.
Sounds:
The game has a soundtrack that compliments the game quite well, it is soothing and really sets the tone, but on the downside the music can be a bit overwhelming at times, and feel slightly repetitive.
There are no vocals in the OST, it’s all melodies so it has its perks there, you can always turn that off in the menu and play your own music, unfortunately the options for the sound is limited to turning the Music and Sfx on or off.
The game houses several unique sounds from picking up items such as gold down to interacting with objects.
Replayability:
The game doesn’t really offer a big reason to replay it, but from my perspective this can be a little side line game you play when breaking away from a serious session or when you just want to play something simple and relaxing for a while, this game really fits into that category well.
MGR Gaming’s Conclusions:
Spoilers Ahead:
When it comes down to the numbers Hero generations is quite a unique game that houses a few popular genre’s such as Strategy, RPG and Rogue-like gameplay all in a simulation that you can Sandbox if you want.
The game has a decent tutorial system that teaches you the mechanics of the game and how to best go about building up your legacy.
From my understanding, before it was ported to Steam it used to be a simple Flash game that really was brilliantly designed and sure it lacks content and longevity, but it still packs quite a decent punch. Usually in RPG’s we create our character and then set out on quests, we have a similar experience here just quite different, we start with our character, male or female its usually random at a random age and each move you make in a direction deducts one year from your lifespan.
Your goal here is to explore, battle and gather fortune and fame all in time to make it back to a city to find a mate, get married and have a child to continue your legacy, thus starting the next generation of your conquest, and this can be done in six beautifully created worlds. As you play and explore current and new worlds, quests become available offering large fame if you manage to compete them giving some purpose to the Sandbox mode should you wish to indulge in those.
As I originally stated the game might not be long or complex, its simplicity really keeps you hooked and busy, as you gather gold you can build a variety of buildings next to town, all which can be upgraded by future generations making the game easier and more fun to experience.
In the recent years the developers have created a remastered version of this game that added a lot of new mechanics and improved the game itself, and by doing so they also reduced the price for this one, it can be bought by itself or you can buy the Hero Generations – Collector’s Edition which includes the OST and a PDF art book, whether the game is on sale or not.
It really is a good game to have that can offer you several hours of joy whether you want to play something relaxing or just something different, this game has it on offer.
