  5. Enhanced Visuals
  6. Upgraded Controls

Remastered:

It’s the same great experience, just remastered for current Gen systems. They did a wonderful job with this remaster though! The game looks and feels beautiful! Every corner you take brings back memories of fear and dread… Wondering if it’s here where it jumps out or killed you so many times in a row, over and over again! It’s amazing and rewarding just as it is punishing.

What
What do we have here…

The game’s age shines through and why wouldn’t it, it’s practically 20 years old. It is thanks to the original that we have the horror genre that we have today. We owe a lot to this game and what it gave us over the years. It is a remaster of a remake and that can be taken as further proof of how incredible this game is and what it offers.

The Remastered version boasts a variety of improvements to the game.

We have 5.1 surround sound that will totally haunt you as you explore this seemingly unending mansion. What is a remaster without HD, RE1 sports 1080p now with updated visuals and textures! Character models were updated as well, and the lighting and shadow rendering was also improved. The game’s world looks absolutely beautiful when the lighting catches it just right!

He's
He’s a big one!

The control system has been given a slight upgrade to make it a tad friendlier to use, especially for new players. Those who played it back in 1996 will remember full well how taxing and unforgiving this game was. The save system, limited inventory space, and the camera control… All designed to stack up the difficulty to offer you one hell of a challenge, and it is still there!

To adjust the game mechanics with the updated visuals they had to improvise on how some mechanics work to keep the same great atmosphere ever-present. This is and was the birth of the Horror Survival Genre we have come to love…

They
They don’t look friendly…

Those gut tearing puzzles requiring you crossing hallways full of undead to progress through the game are still here waiting for you. Don’t forget all those hidden keys and fun jump scares… They’re right here waiting for you!

MGR Gaming’s Conclusions:

I loved every moment of it; however, I can understand how very few people who actually played either the original or the GameCube remake will enjoy it. As beautiful as the game looks, you can clearly tell it is old and very dated. If I look at it, I see memories of a much younger me playing this game having a blast winning or dying…

Time
Time to start this party!

Other than the aged visuals, is the aged gameplay mechanics. Games back then were incredible more difficult to play, and what better example than RE1. The limited saving, if you ran out of ink ribbons, there was simply no saving. The extreme lack of weapons and ammo. It is here where you were taught to rather save those bullets until you really needed them, or couldn’t run away! The difficulty itself didn’t really matter, even on lower difficulties, It only took a few hits for your character to die.

This however was part of the charm and extreme fun that was gaming back then, life was so much simpler back then, and I thank this Remaster for reminding me of that and all the other fond memories it reminded me of…
