You are in for one hell of a night!
Some key points that this game offers:
- Episodic play style
- Claire and Barry are Back
- New game mechanics
- Character Swap
- New enemy types
- Assistive Co-op
Gameplay & Controls:
Big Brother, Resident Evil! You awake to find yourself trapped, there are camera’s everywhere and a strange host… The staff are all a new breed of Zombies and there are some new BOW supervisors… The goal; survive this new hell, when all is set against you!
Quite the step up from RE Revelations one. Combat and controls feel smoother this time around. There are also some new mechanics present as well. Stealth plays a vital role this time. Sneak up on enemies for maximum damage. This greatly helps when bullets are scarce, and if there is one thing that is always scarce, it is bullets!
Melee also got buffed up this time, you can charge up your melee action for superior damage, and what’s more, is that you can co-op that melee with your AI partner to really put the hurt on these new Zombies.
The game boasts assistive co-op play. The campaign is still single player but you can swap between characters throughout the levels. At some points, you will not be able to proceed without swapping characters. Claire helps Moira up on broken ladders and Moira also packs a crowbar to pry open locked chests and doors. With Barry and Natalia, she is the only one that can fit through small openings to help proceed with the levels. Cleverly designed and it totally adds to the Survival Horror aspect since neither of the co-op sidekicks are particularly strong fighters.
There is an impressive skill list that you can upgrade and unlock as you progress through the campaign. These skills really up your zombie-stopping powers. Weapon mods are also back this time around allowing you to upgrade and improve your weapon potentials.
Revelations 2 also follows the Episodic style that Revelations 1 did. I wasn’t too fond of the first one because there were too many characters and you just didn’t get enough playtime with them all. With Revelations 2 they actually improved that concept and brought it down to two characters; namely Claire and Barry. The game, however, only came out with Episode 1, with the second coming out a few weeks later.
Graphics:
The atmosphere was beautifully created to maintain the fact that this is a RE Horror title. The level layout was done brilliantly, the way the visuals tie in with the world itself is flawless and downright gorgeous.
The new zombie types are quite hideous in their own right, they did a beautiful job with our new play mates. Let us not forget the other things that prowl about. They did a fantastic job to up the horror scale on these creatures.
Character design was done just as beautifully; Each character has their own distinct appearance and animations. Lightning and shadows play a brilliant role here, they enhance the experience completely and add to the immersion.
Sounds:
Eerie, gloomy, and downright scary! Everything a RE fan wants and needs. There are sounds and shrieks for everything. You are never alone, nor do you feel alone, and that is only partly because of your ai partner. The sounds are the main player here, as they still make some strange noise in your ear to make you wonder what’s around the corner!
As always the voice over artists did a stunning job with their voice over work. They brought these characters to life beautifully, adding depth, emotion, and a tone to them that fans would adore and totally love.
Replayability:
Once you played and finished the campaign, you play it again on the newly unlocked difficulties… There are a few this time around, so you are in for a real treat! Plus, the return of an older one too.
Rain mode got a massive overhaul! There are new characters, new weapons, and pretty much new everything. As new episodes are released so will their respective raid mode stages.
Update: With the final episodes released for the game, Raid mode now boasts over 15 characters and over 200 raid mode stages. That’s an insane amount of content that will keep you busy for quite a while!
MGR Gaming’s Conclusions:
Spoilers Ahead:
Revelations 2 is truly an exceptionally great sequel to number 1. They fixed and improved a lot of mechanics that were lacking in Revelations 1.
The new Raid mode was a huge step forward, with so much new content that you’ll get completely lost in it. The Levels in the campaign mode are longer than they were in Revelations 1, but that is to be expected since this time around we only have two characters in the game, and the episodes are divided into two parts. Part one being Claire and Moira, and part two being Barry and Natalia.
I loved what they did with Revelations 2, the setting is perfect, the layout and gameplay are fantastic. The story is brilliantly written and plays beautifully. The only thing I didn’t really enjoy was that we had to buy and wait for the other episodes, this is the one thing that I didn’t really enjoy. Patience isn’t the issue, it’s the fact that we get 1/4th of a new game and had to wait weeks for the rest to be released.
The new zombie types again give us new reasons to fear and dread. These are no ordinary zombies though; a new virus gives them some intelligence and manoeuvrability. They can and do use weapons if they have them, some crawl, and others can even run towards you, and these are only the basic ones. The BOW monsters are a whole other ball game waiting on you!
I really enjoyed seeing Claire in action again, the same goes for Barry, they were left dormant for way too long!
Update: Another neat feature that I enjoyed here was the time between the episode parts. Claire and Moira take place in what is the past, and with Barry and Natalia, it is six months later. What is neat here is how you can see what time has done to the place. Things rarely look the same when you visit an area that you played through with the other duo.
They didn’t reuse the same layouts either. Barry and Natalia make use of alternate routes most of the times adding new scenes to the game.
