Rise To Ruins Early Access Review

An adventure that blends the future and past into a full package of fun!

Some key points that this game offers:

  1. Godlike village simulator.
  2. DRM- Free
  3. No Paid DLC’s.
  4. Challenging gameplay.
  5. Numerous Game-modes.
  6. Awesome Developer(s).
  7. Indie Gem 4/5

Gameplay & Controls:

The game is mostly played with the mouse to select, deselect and make choices as you play the game; there are numerous keyboard keys and shortcuts that can be used. Another neat add on here is that every key can be remapped to your personal choices giving you free reign.

Start
Start small and work your way up!

The gameplay is pretty much a godlike village simulator, with a blend of strategy, survival, and base defence, all mashed together to deliver one joyride of a game… once you mastered that learning curve, it is quite steep, but an absolute pleasure to learn.

Graphics:

Pixel graphics ahead… If you’ve been around for a while now, you will know that I quite enjoy a few pixel based games; what can I say… If the game is good that pixel look just adds to the aesthetic of the game, making me enjoy it even more!

In
Incoming!

As you build and expand your village, different buildings have their own worker requirements and as you set the workers for each building, they start doing their given task, all clad in their specific colours giving them all a unique identifying look as to who is who.

The world with its numerous maps are all colourful and beautifully crafted. Each themed uniquely to a specific biome, such as the desert, beach or forest with enough attention to detail to fully resemble their respective biome’s.

Big
Does this mean we won?

The weather and random occurrences are all just as uniquely portrayed, from falling meteors to rainy days, each beautifully designed to clearly showcase its approach, downfall and aftermath.  On the setting side of things, there are a few options we have to customize the game, such as Window/ Fullscreen modes.

Sounds:

The sounds are truly a masterful add on to the game, it really sets the mood, adding that peace and tranquil feel and vibe to the game, whether you are in Sandbox mode or survival mode, the Music really does make this game so much more enjoyable, one easily gets lost within all that the beauty offers.

Castle
King of this Castle!

For the matured and old school gamers, a touch of nostalgia is to follow, as the game really hits that blend of old and new truly beautifully.

Replayability:

The game offers several different game modes on the World Map and then a Skirmish mode.

Trash
Trash needs to be collected; remember hygiene!

Within the World Map there are already numerous playable options for you to choose from, such as Survival mode, Sandbox mode and the Custom mode, along with a few others. So, there is plenty to do again and again, the fun only stops when you stop playing.

MGR Gaming’s Conclusions:
Spoilers Ahead:

Rise to Ruins has been in Early Access for quite some time before I got to it, but upon some investigation it is quite easy to see that the developers deliver regular updates, fixes and improvements for the game. Suggestions to better the game are another welcome sight in the eyes of the developers.

The game itself is simply superb; it is fun, entertaining and so intuitive. You think you are just going to quickly jump into a game and before you take note, several hours have gone by, that is how awesome this little gem is right here.

Wrath
Mother nature or just bad luck?

The sounds, music and general happenings around your little village make it so entertaining to witness and experience, there is so much to do and work towards that planning things out strategically is really required.

There is a learning curve to the game but once that has been done, it is all fun and games for as long as you want it to be, the fun only stops when you stop playing this game. As I briefly mentioned, the game has a few game modes to choose from, most of which have a defensive element to them. As you build and expand, so a corruptive force will come into existence and start attacking you, and that is where the tower defence elements come into play, changing the entire concept of a building simulation to a building defence game…. As I mentioned, tons of fun.

Getting
Getting there slowly…

There is a custom mode where you can customize how you want the game world, then a peaceful mode that has no enemies, last but not least, the ever amazing Sandbox mode… Don’t fret gamers, a few others are there as well, offering unique challenges.
