Spec Ops: The Line Review

Are you looking for an adventure?

Some key points that this game offers:

  1. Choices Matter
  2. Sand-filled Dubai
  3. Brilliant Story line
  4. Emotional and mature driven plot lines
Don't
Don’t forget the sunscreen!

Gameplay & Controls:

The game can be played quite comfortably with the use of the ol trusty keyboard and mouse, or with controller, it comes down to your personal preference here. You have remapping options available to adjust the controls to your exact liking.

The game handles and plays pretty well, the quick action scenes where you run and gun to get to cover was done rather well, even though it lacks some polish and refinement. The battles themselves are quite challenging and a thrill to experience the first time. The additional mechanics like shooting out glass to cause a sand avalanche really added some new experiences to the game.

What
What happened here…

The game takes place in Dubai; it is level-based and as you make progress you move on to the next part of the city. The gameplay is quite fun, action packed and a thrill to experience, it does, however, get quite repetitive, unfortunately, and that is mainly due to the game’s standard combat mechanics. It does very little to offer its own unique fighting mechanics. It really plays like a typical shooter.

The game can be played on several difficulties that will really test your skill for sure. Enemies get way deadlier on the higher difficulties and you become a whole lot squishier.

Ready
Ready, aim… Fire!

The game has a very realistic setting to it which is one of the main features that sets this game apart. That and it’s up close and personal views on how terrifying and dark war can be. The game excels in telling that story, there is no way to describe it, you have to experience it for yourself.

Weapons, weapon use, and ammo itself are all key parts of the realism that Spec Ops: The Line offers. Ammo is quite scarce in the game so at all times you have to be quite conserving of your ammo. It adds to the challenge, but not in such a way that the game becomes too difficult, with a lack of ammo that is…

Graphics:

Beautiful does not do it justice! The colour and visuals that the game has to offer are out of this world! Even amidst all this chaos, death, and turmoil, there is incredible beauty to be found! Level design was done superbly, each area unique in appearance with its realistic versions of objects you would find, such as vehicles or furniture pieces.

It
It is about to go down!

Character design was done just as well with each of the three characters you control having unique and distinct appearances. NPC models were created with just as much detail to make battling enemies memorable as they go out of their way to kill you.

The vibrant colours, and realistic appearance of Dubai really added to the game’s overall quality. The only let down here is the bad rendering for the cut scenes. Under the settings menu, we have full control to adjust how the game can run on our system.

Sounds:

Voice acting was done rather marvellously! The conversations between your squad is captivating and very fulfilling to experience as you go about your mission.

Voice actors did an amazing job bringing their characters to life, the same goes for the NPC’s that you run into throughout the game. The game has a stunning soundtrack that adds to the eerie atmosphere that the game created.

Kill
Kill or be killed!

The background sounds bring life to each level in their own unique ways. Under the settings menu, we have full volume control.

Replayability:

The game offers multiple difficulties and a Co-op mode. So, you can take the game on solo and get a feel for it, and then afterwards get a buddy to tackle the game together on a higher difficulty.

Let
Let them have it!

The game does have a multiplayer as well that offers several different Game Modes. There is Chaos which is the standard Deathmatch type. There is Buried, which plays as seek and destroy and then some.

MGR Gaming’s Conclusions:
Spoilers Ahead:

The game has its flaws for sure, they could have done quite a bit to make the combat mechanics and gunfights more relevant and unique. It is however still playable and enjoyable; it just isn’t great but it isn’t so bad either.

The game does excel in the realism that it has to offer, the strong and quite vivid experiences of how harsh and terrible war can be is a real eye opener. To put it plainly, it was written so well, that the experience is something you will never forget. To date I have never experienced a strong realistic psychological story line like this, nothing has even come close to this. YAGER did more than a fine job here.

We
We can take them!

War is Hell and it is something that only those who’ve seen it can state, but this game gives you a pretty clear picture of what that hell can be like. The game AI is another well implemented aspect here. Your squad mates are rather intelligent and sophisticated in their actions and behaviours, which does add to the gunfights. The commands are a tad lacking and not very responsive at times, but they do their part to help you throughout each mission!

When it comes down to the numbers, this game will give you an unforgettable experience. I will not spoil it for you, but that one experience alone makes this game not only worth it but a must-have!
