Subnautica Review

Prepare yourselves for a survival adventure unlike anything you’ve seen thus far, packed with everything you can think of… Fun, exploration, danger, mystery, crafting… SURVIVAL…. It is the full package!

Some key points that this game offers:

  1. Breathtakingly beautiful visuals.
  2. Survival at its best.
  3. In depth crafting system.
  4. Mysterious story line.
  5. Massive open world environment.

Gameplay & Controls:

The game can be enjoyed in a number of ways, the keyboard and mouse, a game controller, or you can take things VR if you have the hardware. This beauty supports it all.

The controls for the game are fairly simple, they handle and play beautifully, one can easily determine that it was properly play tested. The controls really handle well, above and below water, movement and reactions are quite realistic adding to the experience that the game creates.

Fish
Those are some big fish.

As for the gameplay; every aspect of this game is truly amazing, From the method we scavenge and search for materials to craft with which we catch and prepare food, it is so realistically presented that it truly adds up to one amazing experience.

Stranded on an unfamiliar strange planet, filled with beauty that one cannot fathom and dangers that lurk beneath murky waters… But that is not all that those waters hide, there is such beauty within them that one cannot help stopping to admire how beautiful it looks, how lifelike and truly unforgettable. Subnautica has truly painted a new perspective on how beautiful our oceans are beneath the surface.

Mayday
Mayday, Mayday we went down!

Our main goal is to survive until help comes, we do this by making use of what this planet has to offer; there is an abundance of food and materials below the water. We merely have to venture out and find them, but there is so much more hiding below those waters, one cannot state them in mere words, it is just something you have to experience for yourself!

Graphics:

The graphics are unlike anything I have previously experienced. The beauty and realism that it generates is breathtakingly beautiful.

The very waters itself, above and below, shallow and deep, it all displays in their own very unique and absolutely beautiful way, the darkness and shadows that fold around them as you explore it, day or night it creates an atmosphere that puts you right there in those waters. The wide variety of fauna and flora that inhabits this planet has received the same amount of care and detail.

Alien
Alien Technology!

The fauna; There is a great number of them to find and behold in these oceans. From tiny to Leviathan class creatures inhabit these waters, and they all look drop dead gorgeous. Every aspect of each creature has been beautifully drawn and perfectly presented to bring us lifelike creatures, not only in looks but behaviour as well.

The flora has received the exact same treatment, there is just as many flora species for you to discover, each looking just as beautiful, vibrant and lifelike. Usually in games flora are merely there to fill forests or areas, or to act as décor or recipe ingredients but with Subnautica it is so much more. The flora like everything else is a key feature working in tandem with everything else to present a near perfect game to us. One of the most amazing experiences that this game offers, is deep sea exploration at night when the vast amount of flora illuminates the area with their bioluminescence.

Big
The teeth on that thing!

They grace us with a new beauty that is rarely witnessed, especially since it is a beauty that exists in reality and in our very own oceans. It is superbly done and truly a pleasure to witness. Every aspect of Subnautica has gotten this treatment. Building our bases is just as fun and beautiful, there are so many options and choices to go with that. One can have a ball while building your underwater home.

Under the settings panel, there is a variety of options to fully customize how Subnautica runs on your machine.

Sounds:

Another excellent addition to an already amazing game.

In most cases I usually state that the soundtrack, along with the in game and background sounds sets the mood, and builds the atmosphere up; that is what they are usually there for. A lot of careful planning goes into creating the right music and sound for a game, to ensure that the combination effect fits perfectly to create an unforgettable gaming experience with the game.

Fear
Fear that thing for sure!

However, with Subnautica they not only managed that combination beautifully, they raised it to new heights. This game is as fun as you make it, it offers the full package, it is up to you to take it, use it, and thoroughly have one unforgettable deep-sea survival experience.

Exploring has never been so fun and terrifying at the same time… The deeper you go the higher the suspense gets, but you cannot help but go deeper…do more and be all you can be in this game.

What
What is that!

The sounds are an amazing key element here, from the sounds of water displacement, to you swimming through the numerous ocean biomes with their own unique fauna and flora that inhabit them; they all offer their own unique sound to set the tone and mood for the biome you are in.

Replayability:

Subnautica stops when you stop playing it, there is so much to do, to see and discover in this great ocean that it will keep you occupied for days.

Hot
Things are about to get spicey!

Subnautica offers four different game modes, Creative being the Sandbox, then there is Freedom, Survival and Hardcore, so plenty of options for a variety of gamers to choose from.

The building and collection aspects of the game allows you to create numerous bases above or below the water, it is entirely up to you. These bases can also be customized and filled with decor to suit your survival needs.

MGR Gaming’s Conclusions:
Spoilers Ahead:

Subnautica is practically perfect in every way. The crafting system is amazing, as you explore the ocean, finding wreckage pieces from your ship that can be scanned to unlock blueprint fragments that allow you to build new structures and equipment. This will not only make life easier but are essential to surviving and are truly stunningly implemented, and realistically speaking, on par. It not only encourages you to go exploring but forces you to go to where those growls are coming from, pushing you little by little deeper and deeper, and that is absolutely an amazing experience.

Just
Just look at this cutey!

The game has a story mode, but it is entirely sandbox. There is mystery, a strange infection and alien structures…. You can explore it all or ignore it all the choice is completely yours. You can go wherever you want and do whatever you want, which again helps create this realistic environment.

The day and night cycles really are beautifully implemented and works in tandem with the ocean, when the sun sets the beasties comes out. There are so many crucial aspects to the game that one can lose yourself in its inner workings, whether you need to keep your food and water levels in check or the oxygen that’s left in your tank, nothing feels like a task but pure fun.

Home
Build a new home!

The freedom to build where ever you want sets this game apart from most others. The story line with its mysterious previous inhabitants only adds to the atmosphere and exploration efforts.

The only way Subnautica can be improved would be with multiplayer, this great big ocean does get lonely at times, having a friend or two exploring it with you would increase the fun and challenge to keep yourselves fed…

That is enough spoilers for now, it is time to experience this games beauty for yourself.

Explore the depths.
