Obsidian’s Upcoming Fantasy RPG Promises Diverse Combat and Complex Decision-Making

Avowed, the highly anticipated fantasy RPG from Obsidian, offers a closer look at its magical universe, emphasizing player choice and a dynamic combat system. In the latest Xbox Developer Direct 2024, gameplay director Gabriel Paramo introduces the game’s features, showcasing the freedom and flexibility players will experience in the Living Lands.

The game introduces a unique combat system allowing players to dual-wield wands, described as a “gun-slinging mage” experience. The combat, referred to as a “flexible combat system,” aims to empower players with choices, enabling them to quickly switch between spellcasting, sharpshooting, and melee combat. Drawing inspiration from titles like Skyrim, Avowed’s combat system offers variety, allowing players to mix and match their loadouts, similar to the Dragonborn’s versatility.

The combat presentation demonstrates a range of loadouts, including conventional setups like a sword and shield or bow, alongside more unconventional pairings like dual-wands or a shield and pistol combination. Abilities such as ‘Tanglefoot,’ which entangles enemies with vines, showcase the diverse options available.

The emphasis on player choice extends beyond combat, with game director Carrie Patel highlighting the extensive choices players will have in building and progressing their characters. The Living Lands, the game’s setting, offers diverse regions for exploration, each presenting unique challenges and opportunities.

Quests in Avowed promise meaningful decisions with profound consequences, embracing moral nuance and gray areas. The example of a side quest involving fallen soldiers emphasizes the game’s commitment to presenting players with tough decisions in complicated situations.

While Avowed is still in its early stages, the promise of a new fantasy RPG focusing on player choice and Obsidian’s track record with titles like Fallout: New Vegas has already sparked anticipation for its fall 2024 release.
