“Team building is doing a hotfix together at the Christmas party”
After six years of working on Baldur’s Gate 3 and generating one of the highest-rated games of all time, you’d think Larian’s Christmas party would consist of nothing more than sitting back with some eggnog and congratulating each other on a job well done. But you’d be mistaken.
Hotfix 14 for the RPG was released in the early hours of this morning, which, according to a tweet by Larian’s creative content manager, Ben Maltz-Jones, was also when said Christmas party was in full flow.
“Team building is doing a hotfix together at the Christmas party,” Maltz-Jones remarked, sharing a photo of himself and Larian’s senior community manager, Salomé Moreira Garca, hunched around a mobile phone, presumably getting ready to launch the patch.
According to a post on the official Baldur’s Gate 3 website, the patch addresses multiple crashes, including one in which bibberbangs would cause an explosive finish to your game if someone in your party stepped too close to one when trading in the Underdark. There are also a few updates for the recently released Xbox version, and it brings the feature-rich Patch 5 to Mac.
Surprisingly, this isn’t the first time Larian has published a patch right in the middle of an event. The previous patch was released at the same time as Baldur’s Gate 3 was awarded a slew of accolades at The Game Awards 2023, including the highly coveted Game of the Year Award. This was also the release date for the RPG Shadow for Xbox, which director Swen Vincke entirely overlooked.
