EA Announces Layoffs And Game Sunsetting In Restructuring Effort

Electronic Arts to Reduce Staff by 5% and Shift Focus Away from Certain Licensed IP Games

Electronic Arts (EA) has revealed plans to lay off approximately 670 employees, constituting 5% of its workforce, and initiate the “sunsetting” of unspecified games as part of a strategic restructuring effort. The decision comes amid a broader industry trend of significant layoffs impacting various game development studios.

In an official statement, EA stated its intention to streamline operations and concentrate on its core strengths, which include owned IP, sports titles, and expansive online communities. CEO Andrew Wilson emphasized the company’s commitment to driving creativity and innovation to meet evolving player demands.

While specific details about the affected games were not disclosed, reports suggest that one canceled project is Respawn’s Star Wars first-person shooter. Additionally, EA indicated a shift away from developing certain licensed IP games, citing doubts about their potential success in the changing industry landscape.

The restructuring is expected to incur costs ranging from $125 million to $165 million, with expenses related to office space reductions, employee severance, and licensor commitments. The move reflects EA’s strategic realignment to optimize resources and capitalize on key growth opportunities.

The announcement follows similar workforce reductions in other game development firms, including Supermassive Games, Sony, and Deck Nine Games. These layoffs underscore the challenges faced by the industry amid evolving market dynamics and shifting consumer preferences.

As EA navigates the changing landscape, its focus remains on delivering compelling gaming experiences while ensuring operational efficiency and financial sustainability. The impact of these strategic initiatives on the company’s future trajectory will be closely monitored by industry observers and stakeholders alike.
