It seems fans of the franchise won’t set eyes on Elder Scrolls 6 for a long time yet as the game is still in very early development.

In an interview with The Telegraph recently, Todd Howard confirmed that Elder Scrolls 6 is still being worked on and that we should think of it as still being “in the design phase”.

The game was initially announced in 2016 and then confirmed at E3 2018. Todd Howard announced the game but warned that it was “an extremely long way off” because the technology that was going to be used to develop the game didn’t exist yet.

So three years after the announcement at E3 and five years after the initial announcement the actual technology used to create the game is still being worked on which means fans will be waiting a while for any new news.

In the interview with the Telegraph Howard said: “ It’s good to think of The Elder Scrolls 6 as still being in a design [phase]. But we’re checking the tech: ‘Is this going to handle the things we want to do in that game?’ Every game will have some new suites of technology so Elder Scrolls 6 will have some additions on to Creation Engine 2 that that game is going to require.”

At E3 2018 it was announced that along with Elder Scrolls 6 the company is developing Starfield at the same time and this game has taken priority as we already know it is set to be released on the 11th of November 2022 for all the platforms that support Xbox Game Pass.

Howard mentioned in his interview that the Elder Scrolls Game will benefit from the development work the studio is currently doing on Starfield.

He also said: “The [new Starfield] technology, Creation Engine 2, is sort of built for both [games]. It’s like a new tech base. The vast majority of our development work is on Starfield right now but everybody works on everything so the projects kind of intertwine. It’s good to think of The Elder Scrolls 6 as still being in a design [phase]… but we’re checking the tech: ‘Is this going to handle the things we want to do in that game?’

Every game will have some new suites of technology so Elder Scrolls 6 will have some additions on to Creation Engine 2 that that game is going to require.”

Pete Hines, Bethesda’s SVP of worldwide marketing, stated in May 2020 that fans would not learn about The Elder Scrolls 6 until Starfield was finished.

Howard also stated: “With each new console cycle, we evolved together,” Howard said of Bethesda and Xbox. “From bringing mods to consoles with Fallout 4, now over a billion downloads, to the latest technologies fueling Xbox Series X/S.

These new systems are optimized for the vast worlds we love to create, with generational leaps not just in graphics, but CPU and data streaming as well. It’s led to our largest engine overhaul since Oblivion, with all new technologies powering our first new IP in 25 years, Starfield, as well as The Elder Scrolls VI.”

So there you have it, folks. We can still expect a new Elder Scrolls game, but it will be a couple of years before we hear anything definitive about its release date or any other concrete details.

All fans can do now is to wait patiently for the new installment and you can be sure we will be keeping you up to date with the latest on this exciting news.
