The Molea Cemetery Is an Iconic fixture in the EVE Online community, and now the developers have made it a permanent one.
For more than a decade the Molea Cemetery in the galaxy of New Eden has been a monument to those souls who have died in-game and recently real-life players that have died have had their names immortalized in this Iconic monument.
Molea has been tirelessly maintained by a small group of EVE Online pilots. This group of players have collected the corpses left behind by those players who were killed in-game and entered them into the Cemetery. Molea has thousands of memorials in the form of floating Cargo containers, each one with a short eulogy for the player that has passed.
The memorial has always been a player-created phenomenon and was started by a player named Azia Burgi in 2007. Unfortunately, through the years Molea has had several threats to its existence. These threats have mostly been due to the evolving nature of the game.
In 2008 the developers changed the underlying code to stop items in space floating there indefinitely and thus cause them to despawn after a certain period. Burgi and their friends were determined to save Molea though and thus built a player-owned starbase, which would preserve any loose items, like the Molea graves, inside a certain radius.
This saved the monument for a while, but it hasn’t stopped players from desecrating graves through the years.
The biggest threat to the memorial to date happened a few years back when CCP (the games developers) phased out player-owned starbases replaced them with new Citadels which made Molea no longer feasible.
Luckily CCP listened when players approached them with concerns about the monument’s fate. They have created a new monument that is more aesthetically pleasing and has rules to preserve all memorials within 200km of Molea. This new monument is the centerpiece of the Molea Cemetery. It stands as an enormous statue of basalt columns with a beacon that intermittently emits a bright pulse of light upward. This beautiful new memorial can be found orbiting the first moon of the planet Molea II in the Molea star system.
When interviewed by EVE news website Imperium news Azia Burgi had this to say about the new memorial.
“I’m not sure it has registered that this will now be here forever. It’s just nice that everyone can now enjoy my contribution to the world.”
What a beautiful tribute to all those that have died in-game and those real-life players that have lost their lives, and what an incredible contribution by the developers to show their solidarity to those that have passed.
