Apple is rumoured to be releasing their very own ARM console but how will it shape up?

According to MaruiQHD on Twitter, Apple is working on its own ARM-based console.

MaruiQHD has a fairly good track record when it comes to leaked tweets, but his tweet is so scarce with information it makes one wonder how accurate this leak really is. Apple of course hasn’t made any official statements supporting these rumours, so we should take the information with a pinch of salt.

While Xbox and PlayStation are warring against each other to be the best console maker, it seems that Apple has decided to join the fight. The speculation has been there for many years that Apple would join Sony and Microsoft in creating a gaming console.

As we speak the Apple TV6 has its own in-house A12X Bionic Chip and its own dedicated cooling, so it stands to reason that they can’t be far off from developing their own ARM-based console.

Apple’s biggest gaming venture at the moment is Apple Arcade, which is a subscription-based service for mobile gaming on Apple devices such as, iPad, iPhone, and Mac.

Casual gamers would benefit from the use of this service, but it definitely won’t replace the Xbox, PlayStation, or Switch. If Apple were to develop a Gaming console using ARM chips, the new console might just replace all the afore-mentioned consoles.

Some tweeters have implied that the new “console” could be a new Apple TV that could be used to stream games on or perhaps TV shows and movies etc.

You can see why some would call it a console as it runs on an A10x Fusion chip and it is possible to pair your Xbox controller to it while gaming. The current streaming device is powerful enough to run mobile games at pretty decent frame rates so calling it a console is not a major stretch.

Apple has previously announced its plans to move over to ARM-based processors for upcoming Macs as it does away with its partner Intel. These new chips could deliver a significant performance gains over the AMD GPUs or the A-series SoCs that are currently powering the iPad and iPhone.

It remains to be seen If Apple will be able to live up to the requirements for a really good console considering that the A-series chips aren’t compatible with the x86 architecture needed to play PC and console games. Running those titles would be done via emulation or Apple would need to create a box based on x86.

Although Apple would have a long way to go to rival the Xbox Or PlayStation consoles we are anticipating their attempt with bated breath. It will be interesting to see if these rumours have any basis whatsoever in the truth.
