Veterans of Halo, The Last of Us, and Baldur’s Gate that brims Mass Effect energy

Exodus is a new game from BioWare, the RPG veterans behind Mass Effect, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and Baldur’s Gate 2.

Exodus was announced at The Game Awards by Archetype Entertainment, a new studio led by James Ohlen, Chad Robertson, and Chris King. They have decades of experience working on some of the best RPGs of all time, with Ohlen in particular having worked at BioWare from his days as lead designer on the original Baldur’s Gate through its sequel, KOTOR, Jade Empire, and Neverwinter Nights.

The trio has now assembled a team of developers from BioWare, Naughty Dog, and 343 Industries to produce Exodus, a single-player action-adventure RPG. The first story teaser has a distinct taste of Mass Effect – from the artwork to the FTL gates reminiscent of the Mass Relays, the sci-fi environment of Exodus should be familiar to fans of its founders’ work.

Robertson also explained how the developers hired by Archetype to help build Exodus will support the game’s main pillars. The studio is well-positioned to create meaningful RPG options thanks to its BioWare DNA, but Halo veterans from 343 Industries are focusing on combat. You’ll be able to “choose how you fight” in strategic, tactical combat with powerful alien tech, wielding a mysterious weapon known as the Orion Gauntlet.

Exodus promises a lot of player choice and classic RPG progression, including romance with a group of very alien-looking companions who, according to Robertson, are important in every aspect of the story. Veterans of Naughty Dog, the third major studio mentioned by Robertson and Ohlen, will bring those characters to life thanks to their experience creating some of the best cinematics in the industry, according to Ohlen.

At this time, there is no word on a release date for Exodus, but Archetype has confirmed that it will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC via Steam and Epic. The studio also announced a Founders Program, which will provide in-game cosmetic rewards to anyone who signs up with their email address. Those who sign up this week will also be able to participate in a Q&A session with Archetypes developers to learn more about the game. Exodusgame.com has more information.
