Sony’s new loyalty program, PlayStation Stars, will reward members with “select products” and “digital Collectibles,” among other goodies.
The new loyalty program was announced yesterday on the PlayStation. Blog site stating users can “Join for free, complete campaigns, and earn rewards.”
On the blog, Grace Chen, vice president of networking advertising, loyalty & licensing merchandise stated:
“ All of us at PlayStation take special joy in creating unique products and experiences that delight our fans. Today, I’m pleased to reveal PlayStation Stars, a brand new loyalty program that celebrates you, the player, for being on this ever-growing gaming journey with us.
PlayStation Stars will be free to join when it launches later this year. Once you become a member, you’ll earn rewards by completing a variety of campaigns and activities. Our “Monthly Check-In” campaign simply requires you to play any game to receive a reward, while other campaigns require you to win tournaments, earn specific trophies, or even be the first player to platinum a blockbuster title in your local time zone.
All PlayStation Stars members will have opportunities to earn loyalty points. Points can be redeemed in a catalog that may include PSN wallet funds and select PlayStation Store products. As an additional benefit, PlayStation Plus members enrolled in PlayStation Stars automatically earn points for purchases on PlayStation Store.”
They did say that digital collectibles would also be available for purchase, but they didn’t go into much detail, such as how to buy them. Chen did clarify though that these collectibles will not be NFTs!
Since these goods cannot be bought or sold and do not make use of blockchain technology, Chen insisted that “it’s absolutely not NFTs.”
Chen made sure to emphasize that PlayStation Stars incentives will be appealing to both new and seasoned users in an interview with The Washington Post.
In the interview Chen stated:
“Obviously, for players who have been with PlayStation for a long time and have been on this game journey with us, we want to be able to recognize and reward them in distinct ways, but there will be a lot of aspects about this program that new customers will enjoy as well.”
The PlayStation Stars program will be launched in various regions over time, according to Sony.
Sony’s rivals Microsoft and Nintendo have similar awards programs with Xbox players able to earn Microsoft rewards points by buying and playing games and taking part in Xbox Game Pass quests.
Nintendo fans can also earn “coins” via the My Nintendo program which rewards members for purchases, playing Nintendo’s mobile games, and using other Nintendo services.
Sony ended the blog post by stating:
“We hope you’ll enjoy the program once it launches. We’ll be back with more updates in the future. Thanks for reading!”
Only time will tell how well this rewards program does and how fans enjoy it over time.
