The Tomb Raider universe will be getting a new addition and the upcoming game will run on Unreal Engine 5.
This information comes from Epic Games’ State of Unreal 2022 conference, which highlighted Unreal Engine 5 and demonstrated how easy it will be for developers to create next-gen masterpieces using the new engine.
Crystal Dynamics took the opportunity to announce that they have started work on the next Tomb Raider game.
Dallas Dickinson, who is the Franchise General Manager at Crystal Dynamics stated that the new Tomb Raider will be powered by Unreal Engine 5 to provide “next level storytelling and gameplay experiences”.
He went on to say that their goal is to “push the envelope of fidelity and to deliver the high-quality cinematic action-adventure experience that fans deserve from both Crystal Dynamics and the Tomb Raider franchise.”
Crystal Dynamics has taken over the brand from Eidos Montreal and will be in charge of development. However, given that the company has only recently begun development, we won’t have a release date or any other pertinent news regarding the game and its gameplay for the new Tomb Raider for quite some time.
It’s now pure speculation as to where the new Tomb Raiders game’s story will go and whether it’ll be a sequel to Shadow of the Tomb Raider or an entirely new storyline will be followed.
The new Tomb Raider will be directed by Former Sony Bend Studio director Jeff Ross, who led development on Days Gone. Does this mean there will be more vehicular or open-world gameplay? It is still too early to tell.
This announcement signals the studio’s move from its own in-house foundation engine to the Unreal Engine 5 which seems to be a pattern now among the larger studios which are utilizing Unreal Engine 5 to create their newest games.
These games include the next Witcher game and Black Myth: Wukong.
Unreal Engine 5 seems to be gaining popularity and only time will tell how many more games will be added to this list and how many more studios will adopt the Unreal Engine 5.
