Developer Double Fine has said that Psychonauts 2 is playable and will be launching in 2021
After numerous delays, the much-anticipated sequel to the 2005 Action-platformer will finally be launching by the end of this year.
The sequel was originally announced in 2015 and the developer Double Fine successfully crowdfunded $3,829,024 USD to contribute toward development costs.
Their initial plan was to release the game in 2018 but this was delayed by a year in 2017, and then in 2019, the launch date was delayed again to 2020 and now again to 2021.
After all these delays it is difficult to believe that the sequel is actually being released when they say it will, but In a tweet, Double Fine confirmed that Psychonauts 2 is genuine, playable, and coming “this year.”
The original Psychonauts is described on Steam as such:” A Psychic Odyssey Through the Minds of Misfits, Monsters, and Madmen. This classic action/adventure platformer from acclaimed developers Double Fine Productions follows the story of a young psychic named Razputin.”
The comedic writing of the original was highly praised, as well as the uniqueness and quirks that the individual characters were given. Overall, the first game was well received and gained a lot of fans all over the world.
The second game is described as
“a third-person platform game similar in gameplay to its predecessor. The player will control Raz, a newly graduated Psychonaut with powerful psychic abilities, as he delves into the minds of others. The player will use “Psi-Powers”, such as telekinesis, pyrokinesis, and levitation, in combination with more common platform game elements, to explore the mental worlds of several non-player characters.”
The story will pick up after the events of Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin, with Raz assisting Sasha Nein and Milla Vodello in their attempt to rescue head Psychonaut Truman Zanotto, which began at the end of Psychonauts.
The squad returns to Psychonaut Headquarters after Zanotto’s rescue, where Raz learns that the company is not as it seems. In Zanotto’s absence, the structure of the Psychonauts had been altered by its second-in-command, and psychic science had been shifted away from peacekeeping activities and into more unconventional studies such as necromancy.
The tweet comes on the 16th anniversary of the release of the original Psychonauts and it seems about time that a sequel was released. With all the work that has gone into this game, it is sure to be something amazing.
Psychonauts is due for release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Game Pass, and PC later this year.
