The 5 most difficult games in the Resident Evil franchise

Resident Evil is one of the most beloved franchises amongst gamers and horror fans alike and spans across 25 years. These run and gun games have proved so popular that Capcom has created 24 games to date with more in the pipeline.

As such some will naturally be more difficult to get through than others in terms of boss fights, puzzles to solve, and general gameplay. Follow us into the world of Resident Evil to explore which games were the most difficult and why.

Due to Resident Evils’ difficulty settings, It is difficult to rank which games are easiest and hardest to play through, but we have taken this into consideration to determine a general ranking for the games. We have rated these games from five to one, one being the most difficult.

Resident Evil 7:Biohazard

We start with Resident Evil 7 (also known as Biohazard) as it is the most recent game to be released in the franchise.

This game was very well received and applauded for its return to Resident Evil’s horror roots. This installment was unique in that it showed a first-person perspective, which added a new level of immersion yet to be experienced in the franchise.

The puzzles in this game were a good challenge but yet enjoyable. The atmosphere that the game provided was such that the player had to approach with caution, stealth, and strategy and not just run and gun like in other Resident Evil games.

 Resident Evil 5

Let’s talk about the elephant in the room, shall we? Resident Evil 5 is regarded by fans as a failure to the franchise as the horror element was missing. The game is considered one of the two worst games in the franchise with Resident Evil 6 being widely regarded as the worst. This game went from a one player mode to a 2-player game which was a disaster because of the game’s bad A.I. Some aspects of the game’s control scheme were viewed negatively by many critics. Some players complained about the game’s inconsistencies, such as the fact that you can only take cover from enemy fire in rather specific places. Other controls that are missing are the inability to stutter stepping away from (or quickly leap back from) enemies, as well as the slow targeting. These are just some of the aspects that make the game difficult to play.

Resident Evil 3: Nemesis

This game was a very popular installment in the franchise and like the first two, the story follows Jill Valentine through Raccoon City. It is the third installment in the Resident Evil series, and it takes place almost concurrently with Resident Evil 2.

The difficulty of the game comes from the big ol mutated Nemesis that follows you around as he is an incredibly difficult foe to defeat (check our previous article on how to defeat him). The game requires Jill evading Nemesis a lot of the time rather than fighting him.

The toughest difficulty setting in the remake of this game may put even the most experienced players at a loss, as it truly becomes one of the most difficult games.

Resident Evil Zero

When you ask fans which of the Resident Evil games is the most difficult its is always a toss-up between Resident Evil Zero and Resident Evil: Code Veronica.

explores an abandoned training center for employees of the pharmaceutical company Umbrella with officer Rebecca Chambers and convicted criminal Billy Coen.

The majority of fans would agree that the game’s difficulty stems from the Zombie leeches that latch onto the characters. The inventory system, which would leave characters with little or no items for the majority of the game, was another factor that contributed to the game’s difficulty.

1

Resident Evil: Code Veronica

This is the game that most players would find to be the most challenging in the series, despite not being one of the most beloved.

Released in 2000 the story takes place three months after the events of Resident Evil 2 and the concurrent destruction of Raccoon City as seen in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. It follows Claire Redfield and her brother Chris Redfield as they attempt to survive a viral epidemic on a remote prison island in the Southern Ocean and at an Antarctic research facility.

The game was designed to be challenging, especially for players who have no idea what they’re doing. They’ll get trapped in strange corners, surrounded by difficult-to-defeat enemies that will drain their health and ammunition.

The inventory system was also notoriously terrible, which didn’t improve the game’s playability at all.

Ranked: The 5 Most Difficult Resident Evil Games

These are, in our view, the most challenging Resident Evil games, owing to poor game mechanics that have made them some of the least popular in the Resident Evil series.
