PlayStation And Discord Partner Up

PlayStation and the gaming industry’s biggest chat and community platform Discord have announced their new partnership.

There were reports last month that Microsoft was in negotiations to buy Discord. It now seems that Sony has offered Discord the better deal.

Sony’s president and CEO, Jim Ryan, made the surprise announcement in a blog post on the company’s website. PlayStation made a minority investment in Discord, according to the blog post, as part of an agreement between the two companies to put their experiences closer together sometime early 2022.

Jim Ryan stated “ Together, our teams are already hard at work connecting Discord with your social and gaming experience on PlayStation Network. Our goal is to bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on console and mobile starting early next year, allowing friends, groups, and communities to hang out, have fun, and communicate more easily while playing games together.”

It seems that the PlayStation platform could be changing in the future and that Sony is making changes such as a recent PlayStation patent for a like button in the PlayStation store that was published.

This is not the first time Discord had partnered with console platforms but this time seems different somehow more integrative.

It’s interesting that this agreement came only weeks after Microsoft’s $10 billion bid fell through; one can’t help but wonder what was promised and how the collaboration would operate.

Earlier this year there were reports that Discord received bids from numerous companies and Discord rejected these saying that it “is performing well and prefers to stay independent at this time.”

While no one knows what the exact terms of the agreement are, it is safe to assume that Discord and Sony will be better linked for more “seamless” communication on consoles and mobile devices.
