Company of Heroes Developer Parts Ways with Sega
Relic Entertainment, the renowned developer behind titles like Company of Heroes and Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War, has embarked on a new journey as an independent studio after parting ways with Sega. The move marks a significant shift for Relic, which plans to continue supporting its existing games while exploring new opportunities as an independent entity.
Established in 1997, Relic was acquired by THQ in 2004 before transitioning to Sega’s ownership in 2013. Under Sega’s banner, Relic continued to expand its portfolio with acclaimed sequels and projects, contributing to franchises like Age of Empires and Warhammer 40,000. Now, as an independent studio, Relic joins a select group of developers reclaiming their autonomy in the gaming industry.

The decision comes amidst broader restructuring within Sega, which has announced significant layoffs affecting 240 positions across its European division and various studios. While Sega remains committed to supporting its IPs and delivering exceptional gaming experiences, the company acknowledges the necessity of streamlining operations to ensure long-term sustainability.
Jurgen Post, the new head of Sega Europe, expressed regret over the layoffs while emphasizing the importance of securing the company’s future. Despite the challenges, Sega is dedicated to providing assistance to affected employees, including severance packages and career support.
As Relic embarks on its independent journey, fans eagerly anticipate what the future holds for the beloved studio. With a rich history of delivering immersive gaming experiences, Relic’s newfound independence heralds a promising new chapter in its storied legacy.
