In Super Mario RPG, a never-before-seen cheat code reappears
Nintendo’s new Super Mario RPG remake has restored some cut content that was never seen in the SNES version of Super Mario RPG: The Legend of the Seven Stars. Games in the modern era are rarely all that different from one region to the next. However, in the 1980s and 1990s, this was not always the case. Titles developed in Japan, in particular, ended up being quite different in various regions around the world, whether due to translation or gameplay changes. Super Mario RPG: The Legend of the Seven Stars was one such game that wasn’t exactly the same in every territory, but that’s no longer the case with its remake.
According to The Gamer, Super Mario RPG contains a cheat code that was previously only found in the Japanese version of the original game. This code, which is based on button prompts, can be entered in the game’s menu. The code is activated by sequentially pressing Down, Up, Right, Left, L, R, L, R, and B. Once activated, Toad will appear on-screen to notify the player that they have “found a secret code.”
So, what does this cheat code in Super Mario RPG do? Well, almost nothing. Rather than providing you with additional stats, XP, or other in-game benefits, this cheat simply results in the said greeting from Toad and nothing else. It’s a little anticlimactic, but this code had no effect on the Japanese version either. As such, its inclusion in the remake is more of a joke than anything else. Nonetheless, it’s exciting to see Nintendo include the cheat code in this remake and make it available outside of Japan for the first time.
