The Coalition Announces Move To Unreal Engine 5

The Coalition, The studio behind Gears Of War announced their move to Unreal Engine 5.

The Coalition is the Microsoft -owned studio that is behind the Gears Of War franchise. The developer announced that they are moving to Unreal Engine 5 to focus more on Next-Gen titles and this will mean no new game announcements for a while.

The announcement was made via a blog post on the Gears 5 website. This is what they had to say:

“As we look to future games, we’re excited to start shifting our resources to next-gen development using Unreal Engine 5. Gears of War has always been at the front of Unreal Engine development – as a breakout 720p title for Xbox 360 through last year’s 120FPS multiplayer update for Xbox Series X|S – and we’re excited to continue that tradition by developing on UE5 for multiple new projects in the coming years. Shifting to a new engine is a big undertaking, so we want to be clear that we will not be announcing any new projects or titles for some time.”

It makes sense that they will be taking their time to get used to the new engine and working to get familiar with it.

Gears 5 will continue to be supported by the Coalition throughout the year with shop updates and content drops. This is what they said about it in the post:

“Gears 5 has content on the way, and we’ll continue to release new operations through Operations 7 and 8. Each Operation will have two drops including new characters, new maps, and special events. Through the end of the year, we will have store updates with exciting new content as well as featured playlists.”

The Unreal Engine was developed by Epic Games and was first showcased in the 1998 FPS Unreal. Last Year the capabilities of the Unreal Engine 5 were showcased in real-time footage from a PlayStation 5 dev kit.

Toward the end of the blog post, The Coalition mention that because of this shift to Unreal Engine 5 and all the work they have ahead of them they are hiring, and that they are in search of “more exceptional professionals to help us continue to push the envelope.”

They are searching for Full-Time and Contract roles so if you fit into any of the boxes then you should check it out and apply. This clearly shows their commitment to working hard on current games while still developing new and enhanced titles for fans to enjoy.
