Sony Santa Monica has hired a new narrative director with a Gears of War pedigree for God of War

We don’t know much about where Sony Santa Monica will take the God of War franchise in the future at this point. There have been recent rumors about DLC and a sequel, but nothing concrete has been released. We do know that the studio has hired a new narrative director to help shape whatever comes next. Bonnie Jean Mah is switching from The Coalition, which most will recognize from the Gears of War franchise to another “of War” franchise.

Bonnie Jean Mah

Video Games Chronicle broke the story first, sharing her Twitter announcement. “All right, let’s do this,” she said. “All right, let’s do this…I’m so excited to share my news: I’ve joined Sony Santa Monica as a Narrative Director. I’m beyond thrilled to be working with this team and studio. Let’s goooo.”

Mah worked on Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, Gears of War 4, Gears 5, and Gears Tactics at The Coalition (formerly Black Tusk Studios). Her position progressed to narrative director before she left to work as the narrative lead on Ages of Empire 4 for Relic Entertainment.

She’d later return to The Coalition as the franchise narrative director for Gears of War, before spending two years working on an unannounced game with TiMi Montreal. As Santa Monica constructs the future of God of War, she’ll have a massive new world to play in.

What Happens Next for God of War?

As previously stated, we don’t know anything concrete about God of War’s future. There have been new rumors about God of War Ragnarok getting DLC, but these have yet to be confirmed. Nonetheless, the rumors claimed that fans would learn about it by the end of 2023. That could mean it’ll be revealed at The Game Awards next month, but that’s just a wild guess.

Following that, there have been rumors that the next release will be in the vein of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. If that is the case, it would make sense for PlayStation to make the announcement on a big stage like The Game Awards. In any case, with Mah on board, the franchise appears to be in good hands. Hopefully, we’ll find out what’s next in the coming weeks.
