Many people are losing their jobs this year, as was the case last year

Twitch, the livestreaming site owned by Amazon.com Inc., is laying off 35% of its workforce, or approximately 500 employees, according to Twitch CEO Dan Clancy in a blog post published Wednesday morning. The layoffs are the latest in a string of job cuts at the company.

The layoffs, which were first reported by Bloomberg on Tuesday, come amid concerns about Twitch’s losses and after several top executives left the company in recent months. This, along with the 1800 layoffs already planned at Unity Software, marks a bleak start to 2024 in the games industry.

In 2023, the Amazon-owned video platform experienced two more rounds of layoffs, totaling approximately 400 positions. Overall, the company has lost nearly 1000 jobs in less than a year, which the Bloomberg report attributes to “concerns over losses” and the departure of several top executives. Twitch and Amazon have not responded to the report, but Bloomberg expects a formal announcement as soon as today.

Twitch announced in December that it would discontinue service in Korea due to unsustainable operating costs. The company insisted that it was a one-of-a-kind situation in the region, but the problem may be more serious than previously thought. As always, we wish everyone involved the best and hope that the industry’s economic situation improves soon.
