Amazon has made the decision to change the name of Twitch Prime to Prime Gaming, which more clearly defines the service for Gamers.

Since leaker Rod “Slasher” Breslau told us of an impending name change, Amazon has made the announcement that they have officially changed the name of Twitch Prime to Prime Gaming. This move gives a clearer picture that this service is for gamers and gaming primarily.

Nothing is really going to change, the existing perks of monthly free games, one free channel subscription, in-game content, and bonuses will stay.

Prime Gaming will join the existing services, such as Prime Video, Amazon Music, and Prime Reading in the Prime subscription service. It will still feature a free one-month trial and the price for subscriptions will remain the same.

Prime Gaming General Manager, Larry Plotnick says: “Prime members already get the best of TV, movies, and music, and now we’re expanding our entertainment offerings to include the best of gaming. “We’re giving customers new content that makes playing their favourite games on every platform even better. So no matter what kind of games you love, and no matter where you play them, they’ll be even better with Prime Gaming.”

The theory shared by some is that the main reason for this change is something that is yet to happen, the arrival of Amazon’s game streaming service which will use AWS to stream games directly to devices like Google Stadia and Microsoft Xcloud. This service codenamed “project Tempo”, has been delayed up till now, and was originally supposed to debut earlier this year but has apparently been delayed till 2021.

Amazon hasn’t had a very good time with games such as Crucible that failed so horribly it was put back into closed alpha after no one showed up at its debut. As for New World, the MMO that hasn’t been launched yet was supposed to arrive in July but has been delayed till 2021 as well. New World has changed developmental direction so many times that it is hard to tell what the final product will even look like.

This name change seems to be just one small step for Amazon as it seems that are planning big things in terms of the gaming world.
