Ubisoft Cancels Four In-Development Games

Ubisoft has reportedly shelved a number of ongoing projects, including Ghost: Recon Frontline, Splinter Cell VR, and two other unannounced projects.

The announcement was made by Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot himself during the company’s latest earnings call.  This is apparently part of Ubisoft’s strategy to reduce operating costs and support positive growth in the coming years.

Guillemot stated:

”even more focus on our biggest development opportunities, as evidenced by our decision to stop development on the Splinter Cell VR game, Ghost Recon Frontline, and two other unannounced titles.”

Ghost Recon Frontline was a battle royale take on the franchise unveiled last October. It had over 100 player matches and was advertised as the next major live-service game from Ubisoft.

Frontline never had a release date outside of a planned closed beta that never happened, and the game received harsh criticism from players who preferred a more classic Ghost Recon experience.

As for Splinter Cell VR, the game was revealed in 2020 and was set to be a brand-new Splinter Cell title made exclusively for Virtual Reality. Ubisoft’s Red Storm was working with Ubisoft Reflections, Ubisoft Dusseldorf, and Ubisoft Mumbai to create Splinter Cell VR “from the ground up.”

The Assassin’s Creed game announced alongside Splinter Cell VR is apparently still happening.

Also, the Splinter Cell Remake that was revealed back in December of last year is still in the works and on track with managing director Istvan Tajnay hoping to “see the remake broaden the horizons of the series and reach new players”.

The delay of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora was announced in the same investor call, the game had an initial release window of 2022 and this has now been pushed back to 2023-2024.

It seems that there is a lot of reshuffling of games happening depending on which will bring in more revenue so we will have to wait and see which games are next to get the chop. This is disconcerting as fans look forward to the release of these games and they get cancelled from under them.
