Survival like never before… Every choice has a consequence: should it be wrong, dire circumstances are to follow…
Some key points that this game offers:
- City Builder.
- Resource Management.
- Strategic thinking.
- Choices matter.
- Difficult.
- Indie Gem 5/5.
Gameplay & Controls:
The controls for Frostpunk are pretty simple. The mouse is the main ‘controller’ here, being used to select and manage everything, keyboard shortcuts do exist to make life easier for those that prefer using them. Under settings you can choose to remap them to your personal liking, so you have plenty of options there.
Now for the fun part, the gameplay. Essentially Frostpunk is a difficult City builder with heavy survival mechanics that deeply relies on careful resource management and the choices you make. Making the wrong decisions will lead your city to ruin. This may sound unpleasant, but if you are a survival building player that enjoys a challenge, chances are you are going to love this little gem.
Graphics:
Simply marvelous, every aspect of this game has been beautifully created with amazing attention to detail, from the people walking about the city to the buildings you build. They all have their own unique look and feel; you can clearly and very easily distinguish which building is which, and it is a pleasure to look at your city as it grows from a single structure to a mighty empire.
The weather occurrences are phenomenal; there is a gorgeous day and night cycle where you can clearly see as the light fades to dark and then to light again. The weather conditions, the constant snow, the snow storms, all these elements simply look gorgeous on your screen, scary as hell but gorgeous nonetheless to experience and witness. Under settings; there is a variety of settings that allows you to fully customize your game whether you have a high end PC or not, a few tweaks will make this game run amazingly on your system.
Sounds:
Truly beautiful: This game is already a masterpiece, every aspect compliments the other and joins together to make an amazing game, the sound is no different, from the background music that sets the tranquil mood, to the dramatic beats that make you sweat and be extra hopeful that your people will survive this cold night, they all enhance the game, making it a truly beautiful experience.
The in game sounds; such as the howling winds are simply superb, they bring a sense of truly being alive to the game that makes this game so much more, you simply can’t get enough of it…
Replayability:
The game is fairly new and according to the Developers road map we can look forward to a few scenarios and a new difficulty mode, so we will have replay value right there. Last but not least is that endurance mode where the goal is to survive as long as possible, so plenty of replay right there, especially if you consider how many times you will have to retry until you get it right. Fun times I tell you…
MGR Gaming’s Conclusions:
Spoilers Ahead:
When it comes down to the crunch, Frostpunk is truly a masterwork in progress; thus far they have overdone themselves in every aspect of this game, from actual gameplay right through to visuals and representation. They even added an amazing backstory and story line to your gameplay to further better the overall quality of this already highly remarkable game.
No two playthroughs are the same, you constantly learn how to do things better and pretty much manage and overall survive better, and I tell you that is what makes this game so much fun. This game really sets a new standard of gameplay. Every choice you make in this game either helps your city survive or is the next nail in the coffin.
Careful consideration is required in all aspects; from what to build and when to build it, making sure resources are always there should anything happen. There is a full ‘Tech Tree’ that can be researched to help the future of your city. So much to tell so little time…
This is one game that is an absolute must!
