The Forest Review

You are about to step into a survival simulator you won’t soon forget.

Some key points that this game offers:

  1. Massive Open World.
  2. Freedom to build wherever you want.
  3. Realistic fight to survive experience.
  4. Multiplayer.
  5. Indie Gem 5/5.

Gameplay & Controls:

The Forest offers partial controller support for those that prefer it. For the masters of the old ways, we have full keyboard control and the option to remap keys if we wish, so all in all a perfect blend of command and control.

For those that enjoy that extra touch of reality, The Forest can be played in VR as well, so two for two in this department.

The gameplay is exactly what you think it is. It is a massive open world survival game. We have the usual, hunger, thirst, energy and health requirements. The Forest is large and vast, with plenty of resources to go around, carefully scavenging is the key here, for this forest is also inhabited by Mutant Cannibals that will attack you if spotted.

S.O.S.
Send help…

The Forest has numerous mechanics that enhances your overall game experience. The game has a stealth mechanic making it possible for you to hide from said cannibals. Your action in the world also determines a few things, chopping down trees will aggravate the cannibals quite heavily if they witness the event.

The AI behind them was very cleverly done, they make use of stealth and hiding techniques themselves, and once you are spotted, they will try to flank you as they close in for the kill.

You can almost build anywhere you want, although you shouldn’t… That choice and freedom is entirely yours. A camp on the beach? Why not? What about on a hill, sure thing?

Art
Pretty pictures…

The choice is entirely yours, you can build grand tree houses or water homes, that is just some of the freedom that the game offers, along with a massive list of items that can be crafted, items such as weapons, weapon upgrades, medicines and armour.

All the ingredients can be found in the forest, whether it is fauna that can be hunted, or flora that can be foraged. Numerous camps and wreckage pieces lie scattered throughout the forest for you to find and make use of.

The Forest offers this and so much more, but this is where I leave you to experience it for yourself

Danger
Danger is here!

Graphics:

Given the scale and presentation of the game, the graphics are downright gorgeous. This is another example of how powerful the Unity engine is and in the right hands, it can create wonder, The Forest is such a marvel!

The Forest feels alive with the numerous movements that can always be seen, whether it is the trees themselves, or the wild life that are in abundance within the forest, it is all there for your visual splendour.

Everything has a lifelike look to it, the trees you chop down, the terrain that you traverse through, whether it is shallow water, snowy terrain or the wide open forest, it all looks and feels alive.

Home
It’s not much, but it is home!

Character models have been beautifully created, giving us a very lifelike enemy that resembles humanity very closely in appearance and behaviour.

Under the hood we have numerous settings to fully customize how our game runs.

For a world this large the game really handles and plays beautifully and very smoothly.

Behind you!

Sounds:

Another aspect that has been beautifully delivered. The music, and in game sounds come together stunningly adding to the liveliness that The Forest presents.

Run
Run!

At night you can hear howling in the distance. The wind can be heard whether it is a casual breeze or a thunder storm overhead, there is this and so much more. Every action has its own sound to keep up with the lifelike atmosphere that it generates.

Replayability:

The game has several game modes; there is standard survival mode which can be played on different difficulties along with the permadeath option.

Safe
Safe…for now!

The best aspect here that the game offers is multiplayer where you and a few mates can survive together, so the fun never ends.

MGR Gaming’s Conclusions:
Spoilers Ahead:

When all is said and done The Forest is a downright amazing game; it delivers the survival experience beautifully and in such a lifelike and realistic way that it just makes the experience truly memorable.

The story line that is pieced together as you explore and scavenge comes together bit by bit, but in a very mysterious way, this little mechanic was very well thought out and implemented. When we start our game, we have a few basic goals, with the important one being Timmy, and as we go about completing this one, we slowly get to explore and enjoy everything that The Forest offers. If we carefully loot, we really do find all that we need.

Touch
A bit of civilization…

The game can be played single player or multiplayer, however based on my own experience, single player is just not as fun; not when the game offers so much to do, to find and explore.

The Forest is best played with friends, this is where the game excels , it can be completely played solo, I have done this and completed it a few times this way however my playtime felt lonely and lacking and the only way to fix this is to play with some mates, so keep this in consideration.
